They're not saying joking about Trump is just as bad, they're saying joking about Haitians eating pets is just as bad no matter which side it comes from. "Cheeky neoliberal jokes that attempt to be at Trump's expense" is also a problem!

That's similar to what I was thinking. I don't mind jokes at Trump's expense but someone else shouldn't be getting hurt as a result. There's a time and place for everything. Obviously I'm not saying to give in to the bullies, but maybe think of better ways to combat the bullies if the jokes are doing more harm to an innocent party than good.

This. In a better world we could just laugh at the absurdity, but this is tapping into an ugliness that's hurting real people in the real world.

Making jokes about Haitians eating pets would be bad, sure. But jokes that make fun of the idea as being absurd (because it is) and insane (because it is) aren't, IMO. Of course people should mock the claims being made, because they're worthy of mockery.

The people making those jokes are contributing to the racism, whether they realize or not or if they like it or not.
