(Anonymous) 2024-09-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)As someone who was there in the 80s, Baywatch's existence has zero to do with any beach episode of any series ever. If anything it owes its inspiration to Miami Vice, which was "MTV COPS" written on a napkin.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-19 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Forced misunderstandings in a lot of modern romances have no broader underpinning, and tend not to make a whole lot of social sense. They aren't understandable, and so they don't feel real; they just feel contrived, or as if the characters are very stupid.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-19 02:26 am (UTC)(link)Don't get me wrong, a lot of romances do have forced misunderstandings, where you feel like this is something people could easily get over if they just TALKED to one another, or if they weren't terminally stupid. Real, understandable misunderstandings are hard to write, though. Most authors can't manage it, so that's why you have people suddenly being conveniently dumb, making incredibly asinine mistakes, saying asinine things, etc. etc.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-19 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)But I'd think anyone who's been in relationships of their own with people they love and respect has a lot of experience with understandable conflicts, hurt feelings, misunderstandings, and having to work them out. People can value different things. People's sense of what's likely to happen and needs to be taken into account can be coming from past experiences that are drastically different. Or from trusting sources of information that are incompatible (including other people). People can realistically let fear get the better of them, and then want a course of action that shortchanges one important value because they think only that course of action will adequately safeguard what they think is threatened. People can say things with directness and vehemence, and the other person thinks they meant something that they didn't actually say. If writers were drawing more from their lives, I think all of this would be considerably less "hard to write." It does not need to be invented. It might ring a lot truer if it wasn't.
