Original Nightmare on Elm Street series, ftw!

Bring on those pretty final girls.

Yes! Modern horror is often so gory that it becomes more about the gore than the story. I don't mind gore that suits the plot and makes sense. But overdoing it just ruins things.

And on the other extreme, you have those modern horror movies that just drag the whole "oooh it's so vague and abstract" out so much that it becomes a pretentious snoozefest with the occasional cheap jumpscare.

This is true. There are some older horror movies too that have very little actual plot or scare until the very end, and those have never been favorites of mine.

I prefer jump scares over gore and body horror.

Yeah I feel this. I try to avoid anything 'too real/gory', unless its a scifi/fantasy or has an interesting enough story to tempt me in. But I agree with loving the classics too :)

Having "not self aware at all" and Scream be RIGHT THERE in the image is sooooo funny.

Came here to say this.

I'm with you on most of that, I am, and I don't know if you chose the movies in the image or not, but I would not include Scream as a movie that was not self-aware, in fact, I would say being self-aware one of its defining characteristics. And of your list, self-aware is something I'm okay with if the movie isn't too precious with it. Anyway, there are some more recent movies I would consider not too gross, not too gory, not too horrifying, and fun along with old school slashers - Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day 2U, and Freaky (all three are by the same director).

DA

I thought having "Scream" in the photo was a bit wrong, but thought maybe I was being too nitpicky XD

And I agree with the Christopher Landon films.
