More news about people being purged from US voter rolls today.

Check yours if you plan to vote this year: https://www.vote.org/

NC in particular where 700k+ were removed: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/

"The State Board of Elections in the release said the majority of those stripped from the rolls were deemed ineligible to be registered because they had moved within the state and did not register their new address, or because they did not participate in the past two federal elections, prompting an inactive status."

Weird Things That Give you Nerdy Joy

What little, unexpected things make you feel extra nerdy and extra happy?

I've finally found a pair of knee-high boots that fit my super wide calves. Every time I wear them it makes me feel like I'm in LOTR or Star Wars and makes me really happy.

Pretty much any time a stranger compliments me on a nerdy thing I'm wearing. I have a brass medallion from Dark Souls games that I wear most days at work as a comfort thing, and I'll get the odd compliment from someone who just thinks it looks really pretty, but occasionally a fellow nerd will go "oh my god I love it, which game's your favourite," etc.

I'm incredibly shy and anxious so having that instant opportunity to talk to someone about something I really love is always the best.

The afterglow of a great movie.

Also, if I can wear themed merch in a way that isn’t obvious to most folks, I feel like such a sneaky ninja type person. Ditto for fashionable stuff that echoes a fave character’s color scheme.

People going the extra mile to put in little details that only the deeply nerdy would spot and appreciate.

F'rex: the Teen Titans (not TT Go!) episode "The Apprentice" where Robin's basically been blackmailed into working for Slade. The rest of the team, not knowing this, wonder why he's acting so strangely and Beast Boy (being who he is) whips out a comic book and claims Robin's a zombie. We see the panel (http://legacy.fanboyplanet.com/ontv/images/teentitansAPPRENTICE2.jpg) and not only did the artist do a very good Jack Davis impression but they even used the same lettering EC Comics did! Who's going to spot that... except geeks like me?

Fanfic readers

What is the perfect length fic for you?

Around 40,000 words. I rarely read fics less than 3,000 words unless the summary is really good. And anything more than 500,000 always feel like too much.

For a single fic, between 150k - 500k, generally. For a series? The longer the better.

Depends on what I'm looking for. For PWPs, I prefer a single chapter. For plotty fics, I like longer things.

Re: Fanfic readers

It really depends on the fandom. It’s rare to find any fics over 30k words for the early 2000s and earlier fandoms I’ve been reading lately. Most are around 5k. For newer fandoms, I start my filtering at complete with minimum 50k and will gradually lower the word count when I finish reading everything at that count. Rinse, repeat.

Totally depends on my mood

(Anonymous) 2024-09-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I want a quick 2k story, sometimes I want an epic 40k story to sink my brain into.

However long it takes to tell the story. Flat world or characters? Too short. Gets tedious? Too long.

The longer the better! But only the really good ones. A mediocre fic sometimes just draaaaaaaaags on....

Re: Fanfic readers

(Anonymous) 2024-09-27 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually go for the 1k- 10k fics when I want a few quick reads; but if I have the time and the story ticks my interests then I'm fine with 20k+ fic.

Re: Fanfic readers

(Anonymous) 2024-09-27 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)

If a fandom has so many daily fics I can pick what I read, I will prioritize longer fics (10k+) because there aren't enough hours in a day, you know. But I'll read shorter fics if they have interesting summaries.

Random Thoughts

The messiest people I know were all in the military. Seems to me all that regimentation made them go to the opposite extreme once they were out.

What's a random thought you've had lately?

That while I hate tomatoes, the smell of the plant it grows on is amazing.

My tumblr is absolutely indistinguishable from any other, it's just random shit I find fun or interesting. But it's also completely unique to me.

Doesn't mean anything, just thoughts.

What are you excited about?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-27 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Our washer is about to die and dryer has been broken for years (can only use it on low heat). Finally buying new ones and they'll be delivered next Friday. ☺️

We just replaced our 20 year old fridge and I love it so far. Grats on the new washer/dryer, new appliances feel great :)

That's awesome, nonny! I'm just excited for the weekend because this has been a long week and I'm meeting up with a friend on Saturday, so it's gonna be fun.

We're waiting on a good sale to replace our range. The oven is getting wonky and it is about 20 years old. We're going to get an induction stove top and I'm so excited to have one. Being excited about it also makes me feel old.

This weekend we're going to have perfect weather for line-drying my laundry, and I absolutely love line-drying. I love the act of hanging the clothes; I love the way they look on the line; I love the satisfaction of unclipping them once they're dry; I love the way they smell after a wash with fabric softener and a morning spent in the sun. I can't wait.

I have a bunch of projects for which I’m just reaching the final stages. I’ve worked hard on all of them and a couple really pushed me out of my comfort zone. So far everything has gone well and I’m excited to enjoy the end results.
