Fanfic readers

What is the perfect length fic for you?

Around 40,000 words. I rarely read fics less than 3,000 words unless the summary is really good. And anything more than 500,000 always feel like too much.

+1

I think the sweet spot for a really good fic is 35k to 45k. Basically a long novella.

For a single fic, between 150k - 500k, generally. For a series? The longer the better.

Depends on what I'm looking for. For PWPs, I prefer a single chapter. For plotty fics, I like longer things.

It really depends on the fandom. It’s rare to find any fics over 30k words for the early 2000s and earlier fandoms I’ve been reading lately. Most are around 5k. For newer fandoms, I start my filtering at complete with minimum 50k and will gradually lower the word count when I finish reading everything at that count. Rinse, repeat.

Totally depends on my mood

Sometimes I want a quick 2k story, sometimes I want an epic 40k story to sink my brain into.

However long it takes to tell the story. Flat world or characters? Too short. Gets tedious? Too long.

Yep. Some stories need to be short, other stories need to be long.

The longer the better! But only the really good ones. A mediocre fic sometimes just draaaaaaaaags on....

I usually go for the 1k- 10k fics when I want a few quick reads; but if I have the time and the story ticks my interests then I'm fine with 20k+ fic.

If a fandom has so many daily fics I can pick what I read, I will prioritize longer fics (10k+) because there aren't enough hours in a day, you know. But I'll read shorter fics if they have interesting summaries.
