[Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac]

Oh boy, it's this week's episode of Grandma and Grandpa's Thoughts on Yaoi! I wonder what they will be this time!

What's that, you say? Exactly the same? Why, I never! They got us again!

(Anonymous) 2024-09-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmmm.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

While I agree the original Saint Seiya was really weird about female characters (later series not nearly as much), turning Shun into a girl kinda adds a layer of unfortunate implications to all his personality traits, assuming they've gone unchanged.

(Also antagonize BL fans a little more, why don't you.)

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
This exactly. They would have gone and make an original character or use one of the female Silver Saints for more "female representation", but Shun's personality traits is what made him better than the others. It wasn't even needed.

DA

I mean OP is clearly being totally absurd and ridiculous, but there really isn't anything wrong with genderflipping a character.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the low key sexist undertones of turning him into a girl

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me you didn't read/watch Saint Seiya without telling me.

Shun was special not because of "he never fights and would rather cry for his brother, so gay", but because he was a pacifist warrior with one of the most dangerous weapons in his hands, and he would rather use the word than fight, if needed.
Turning him into a girl didn't anger the fans for "ew straigh pairings", but because it made them look like "all men only want to fight, women are the pacifist ones". PLUS is obvious the one who remade Shun didn't even watch the anime or the manga: Female Silver Saints wear masks (Eagle Marin and Ophiuchus Shaina, IE). Where is Shun's mask?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Nevermind how sexist it is to make the feminine one into a girl because... Why?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Women need representation in an anime about fighting and death and sacrifice for the reincarnation of a Greek Goddess", duh.
And besides the pink armor, Shun represented Andromeda, the princess that Perseus rescued. Double sexism right there to imply that Shun needs to be always saved.

+1

Him being the only genderswapped character (if that's the case?) would leave a bad taste in my mouth, for the reasons you've said.

[personal profile] luxshine 2024-10-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
that is the case.

Also... not only his armor is considered the most powerful of the bronze ones, HE is far more powerful without it. The armor helps to constrain his power. Which, in making him a girl, makes his later arc another case of "Woman went insane with power and we need to contain her for her own good"

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Fanbrats"? Is it 2002?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it was a stupid decision, but if they wanted to make one of them a girl, they could’ve chosen Ikki. It still would’ve been dumb, but you know they chose Shun because his cloth’s pink and he’s a pacifist.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
IMO They would have left the characters just like they were and that is. But Ikki as woman? mmfff, a butch silver saint sounds good.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
TFW writers try so hard to be pro-women that they end up accidentally being sexist/enforcing gender roles

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Methinks you're a homophobe, OP, and that's what you're "bullied" over.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 12:48 am (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one who noticed the low-key homophobia from this.

You're entitled to your feelings, but wew, I haven't seen the phrase "fanbrat" since the 2000s. This secret feels like something a time traveler from 2007 traveled to the future and got a rude awakening of how gay ships are more normalized.

I now headcanon Shun as a transgirl, too.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Shun as transgirl means she might have to wear a mask and she's the pacifist one, "rude men are meant to fight".

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Fanbrat" threw me because I remember it from one specific Livejournal community I used to belong to, and one member there in particular who was a Saint Seiya fan. The only thing that makes the secret clash with what I remember of her is that she wasn't a het-only shipper.

That whole community had some unfortunate, though common at the time, views on shipping and female characters, though, that I also see reflected in this secret. It really does look like it time-travelled, with the use of "fanbrat" and undertones of "Female characters are allowed to be feminine and if you criticize a feminine female character's writing you're a misogynist that hates femininity!" And not in the secret per se, but there was also a lot of "It's different for anime because did you know that Japanese culture, unlike Western culture, RESPECTS feminine women?!"

3/10 you got a few bites but they are less bites and more arguing on principle.

On the off chance this is not a lazy troll: Abloobloo poor widdle oppressed sexist, homophobic het shipper ;_; *makes you a tea steeped in your own tears* >_<

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Lazy bait that people fell for.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
F!S has 5% of the activity it did in it's glory days, so I can't fault people for wanting to respond to something dumb. It generated a decent discussion about SS at least.
