Unfamiliar with this series but the secret reminds me of all the awful romance fic where the rival/other person in the love triangle somehow always turns out to be an asshole, even if that's completely inconsistent with their canon personality.

I love this book and it makes me sad that so many people are going to read this secret and avoid reading the book it because it. Theo was not evil, and the book was very clear in the end about that and the fact that he was also a victim. My only complaint is that his relationship with Benji was more developed than Nick's all the way through and the book summary make Nick's "dark secret" out to be a lot more of a plot point than it ended up being. However, Nick and Benji didn't actually end up together, it was only implied that they could eventually, so I can forgive the lack of development a little bit.

Anyway, there are a ton of other things that really do have that trope, and it's actually one of my hated things I avoid, and I was afraid this book was going in that direction for a while, but it didn't.

In my experience, authors usually end up doing this when they've accidentally made Mr. Wrong more interesting/likeable than Endgame McBland. The quick fix to that is to write it so that Wrong's only got layers because he's Evil.

Well, "Mr. Evil" here was always "evil" if we're agreeing with the OP's opinion (he's obviously on the side of the actual evil group, that's his whole thing from the beginning, and the MC knows this and knows he's making the wrong choice by still seeing him), so it wasn't just a tacked on thing. And IMO "Endgame" is an interesting character by himself, "dark secret" that wasn't really not withstanding. It's just that his relationship with the MC was underdeveloped.

Again, I am familiar with the trope and reasons for it and I hate it, but this book is not it.

I meant to post to the main thread and not as a response to your comment specifically. I haven't read the book, so I've got no skin in this game. As you said, it's ridiculously overplayed trope in YA romance and it's usually because Endgame is bland as dry toast once they're not pretending he's "mean" anymore.

I do think this book uses Theo really well compared to other books I’ve read.

Yeah it’s a pretty standard staple in YA books and the romance genre in general, I’m not a fan of it, as you said: two characters can in fact just be incompatible without the second guy being a massive piece of shit.

But then I’m convinced that authors do this because if second dude was as good as he’s first portrayed maybe less fans would like the main asshole the MC gets paired up with, and we can’t have that.

Are there any books where all three of them end up together? I'm assuming there are, but how to find any - and how to weed out the bad ones - sounds like a project bigger than I'm willing to take on. I'd be so down for that, especially if the guys aren't afraid to kiss, too.

There’s a polyamory comic called Love Me to Death, but it’s based on romances for adults, not YA romances. Its “guy who would normally get dumped” is the stuffy rich dude who has a hard time showing his feelings. (Ironically, the guy who would normally get dumped has his own girl who would normally get dumped, and he actually dumps her.) https://m.webtoons.com/en/fantasy/love-me-to-death/episode-1/viewer?title_no=3203&episode_no=1

I don't know this book but I agree with you. It's not an either/or question, 'they are both assholes and I deserve better' is always an option.
