But there are different definitions of the word, and with some definitions I can see that video games could be argued as not being Art.

I disagree, because I think the academic discussion surround What Is Art and High Art ridiculous but to say people in those discussions don't understand the basic definition is just kind of silly. You are just having two different arguments basically.

I'm sincerely curious, under what definition of art would video games not be art?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I don't think video games inherently are art. Like is Pong art?
On the other hand, I don't think video games inherently aren't art.

Not all writing is art. Some writing is definitely art though.

It depends on the game.

Is Pong art? Yes, of course.

For some people, art doesn't just mean any creative work. Some definitions of the word refer more narrowly to a certain level of quality. Then of course there are disagreements on what is included. But the word art does have multiple meanings.

I mean, if we're talking purely about quality, then let's be real, a lot of "art" doesn't really qualify as art.

Oh, I totally agree. All I'm saying is that different people mean different things when they use the word art.

Is a simulated version of tic tac toe, art? Is playing a sudoku game in game app, art?

Are sports art?

To try to be generous: I once read an essay arguing that nothing interactive should be considered art, because art is just taking in what the artist offers. I thought this was stupid, but it was at least creatively stupid.

Under academic definitions. It could be considered low art by some, but generally speaking movies, tv, video games, all not considered art.

It would be like calling all written forms literature.

To be clear, I don't agree. I find most philosophical definition discussions eye roll worthy and not worth my time, but I have a few friends that love to discuss this stuff. (though not with me lol)
