It was more about his Catholic faith and his idea that death is a gift. Elves are immmortal, but their souls are tied to the world. Humans get to die and then go on to whatever comes next, whatever that is. Elves die, go to Mandos, and if they are good eventually are reborn in Valinor. But they remain tied to the current world.
