Horror movies

(Anonymous) 2024-10-02 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's October, so horror movie season for me. I have older favorites, of course, but I've been thinking about watching more newer horror movies (arbitrarily defined by me as 2010 or later).

Really enjoyed:
Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil (2010)
Happy Death Day (2017)
Crawl (2019)
Happy Death Day 2U (2019)
Freaky (2020)
Love and Monsters (2020)
The Black Phone (2021)

Liked well enough:
Final Destination 5 (2011)
The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Krampus (2015)
The Meg (2018)
The Hunt (2020)
Old (2021)
Scream VI (2023)

Meh:
Bag of Bones (2011)
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Knock at the Cabin (2023)

Disappointing to me:
Scream 4 (2011)
Halloween (2018)
Ready Or Not (2019)
Scream (2022)

Pretty awful:
Fantasy Island (2020)
Renfield (2023)

Definitely to be watched if I can find them:
You're Next (2011)
Cockneys Vs Zombies (2012)
The Final Girls (2015)
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)

Maybe to be watched if I come across them:
The Woman in Black (2012)
What We Do in Shadows (2014)
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Train to Busan (2016)
Black Christmas (2019)
Escape Room (2019)
Slaxx (2020)
The Columnist (2021)
Fear Street Trilogy (2021)
Last Night in Soho (2021)
Werewolves Within (2021)
The Blackening (2023)

Anything else you think I'm missing from my lists of newer movies to be watched? (I don't really go for the A24 type horror films (Hereditary, Midsommar, X, The Witch, etc.). Of all their horror movies, only Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) seems like I might possibly enjoy watching it.) Anything I shouldn't have on my to-be-watched lists? Any of your own reviews of newer horror movies?

Barbarian, His House, The Innkeepers, and Pontypool.

I do like movies with twists, which apparently Barbarian has (don't know what it is, just that there is one), so thanks for the rec.

DA
Yeah, it seems like Barbarian would be to your taste.
(Also do not google the twist, I spoiled it to myself and it was a mistake)

the first Zombieland was better
I also like the V/H/S movies, It Follows, Murder Party and Oculus

I did like the first Zombieland better (I didn't include it because it was a 2009 movie). I've heard that Oculus is a real head trip of a movie and that It Follows is good. I'll keep those in mind.

The Hunt and The Cabin In the Woods are really good.

They are pretty good. They both stuck with me for a while after I watched them.

Strike Train to Busan off the 'maybe' list and put it on the 'MUST WATCH' list.

Agreed! I loved it!

+100 to Train to Busan. It's a damn good movie and I am not a zombie fan. (Train to Busan 2 is hot garbage and I am really salty about it)

I love Last Night in Soho but I wouldn't call it horror though.

I love Last Night in Soho but I wouldn't call it horror though. Well, it's labelled as horror and was nominated for awards in horror categories, but sometimes what one person would call horror is what another would consider a thriller. Though, I guess I would say a movie could be both.

True, true.
Also I don't mind movies not being a pure horror, I prefer mix of genres. I am Nope fan, so it is what it is.

Anyway! I remembered another rec - Prey. It's quite fun

Prey, that's the Predator one set way back, right? I'll keep that in mind.

Yeah, it is. I am not into Predator but I still have found it enjoyable. CG animals were pretty weird ngl, but MC being smart was quite fun

Oh no, why did you hate Renfield? I watched it with friends and it was just... FUN.

The tonal shifts were weird to me, and it didn't balance the different elements of story and genre that it was trying to in way that worked for me. It seemed like it had a lot of potential that went nowhere to me.

I love You're Next and Cockney's vs Zombies. I know YN is on Prime if you're Canadian, alas I don't think I've seen CvZ anywhere, I ended up DLing it and buying the DVD.

Yeah, I heard about Cockneys Vs. Zombies a couple of years ago and I'm not sure it's ever been available on cable or streaming, unlike a lot of others (even if many of them are on services I don't have and won't get for just a couple of movies).
