Re: What's the most money you've ever spent on a hobby?
(Anonymous) 2024-10-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)Backpacking gear is probably the only hobby where I get gear envy and always want the newest shiny thing. I don't really care with my other hobbies. Right now I keep window shopping sleeping quilts and backpacking tents.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-04 12:58 am (UTC)(link)I got a Durston X-Mid Pro a few months ago that’s to die for! If you’re looking for top of the line and ultralight, Dyneeema is the way to go. I spent months comparing Z Packs and Durston and ultimately chose the Durston because the poles don’t block the entryways and because this year he introduced the option to have a Dyneema floor (but he still makes and sells the polysil option). The thing is insanely light and it’s an absolute palace.
I also got a new quilt this year that I really like, a Katabatic Flex 30. I’m not in love with it the way I am the tent but it’s perfect for me for now. I think I’d like to make a couple myself in the future at different temp ratings. But that’s far in the future and the Katabatic is great because it’s the right middle temp rating for the times and places I backpack.
