What are the weaknesses of every generation?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-04 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Take Boomers, for example. I think one of their greatest weaknesses relates to old age and not understanding just how much times have changed. That's exacerbated because SO MUCH has changed from their youth till today. It's almost a cliche, but my own parents don't really get just how expensive it is to buy a house, for example, and how it's out of reach for so many younger people. They truly believe that young people just aren't working hard enough/saving enough money or they too, could graduate from college, get a good job and buy a house and a new car, just like that.

My step-mother's father got a factory job right out of high school, got married, bought a house and had 3 kids before he was in his late 20s. He worked all his life for the same company, retired early, bought a condo in Florida where he and his wife snowbird it every winter and had a pension. And neither he nor my step-mother fully grasp that this will NEVER be a viable option for young people today, no matter how hard they work.

With Generation Z, I think their greatest weakness is not knowing how to research anything. If they have a question, they're more likely to ask the internet or ask ChatGPT. It's almost weird how allergic the average Gen Zer is to looking stuff up and figuring out a reputable source from one that isn't legit.

I think it's funny but boomers and Gen Z have the same issues with not understanding privacy and how not everything has to/should be posted online. Boomers don't get it because they still don't fully understand the extent of the internet and the ramifications of putting private details out there for everyone to see. Gen Z don't get it because they're so self absorbed and chronically online that they can't fathom a reason why anyone should feel bothered by being displayed to the internet against their will.

I think the younger generation is hampered by youth and not being able to think ahead. I see people who are so incredibly young making Youtube/TikTok videos and I think holy shit, what a bad idea. Putting your name and face out there for predators? No thanks. That shit is forever, as far as you know. You really want to be interviewing for a job that you're desperate to land with videos of you being casually racist for teh lulz, or with your ass hanging out like that? Where the hell are your parents?

Probably every generation is guilty of this to some degree, but thinking they invented every trend and not realizing a lot of them are retreads from decades ago. Case in point: Jojo Siwa thinking "gay pop music" is some rare concept no one heard about until she came on the scene.

My Gen Z nephew explained tone indicators to me and I had to break the news that millennials did that, too. I bet Gen X got to it before us, too.

Haha even better.

I am that in between GenX and Millenial. I claim neither

Pretty much all of the generations are weak to swords, I've found.

Boomers: hubris (don't think they're doing anything wrong and the wind on their back has not yet lead them wrong, allegedly)
Gen X: nihilism (everything sucks so why bother)
Millenials: infantilization (either too stupid/inexperienced to be useful or too busy being defensive at being accused of being too stupid/immature to do anything useful)
Gen Z: hubris (everyone is an unoriginal idiot except for them)
Gen Alpha: raised by above groups

I can't even write a sentence correctly. I'd lie down and let the cars take me, but the floor is uncomfortable.

Every generation has the same weakness - they forget people are people.

Young children grow to become teenagers then adults then retirees. They make the same mistakes and assumptions as the previous generation did when they were in the same stage of life, and pretend it's all new; that they're somehow seeing things clearer, that they are free from the foolish ideas of the past and the propaganda of the present, and that they are Right where others are Wrong.

Generational theory is fucking stupid and has little to no basis in sociology. It's just baseless and judgemental stereotyping and oversimplification of people with very different backgrounds, experiences and thoughts (and also works with the premise that people don't change as they get older, which is just ridiculous).
