I am vegan and I root for them but also brace myself and think "please don't embarrass us"

(Us being a vegan/vegetarians lol)
sabotabby: picture of M'Baku from Black Panther, "Just kidding, we're vegetarians." (m'baku)

Same but also I'm proud of anyone who vegan bakes. I know how hard it is.

I didn't think your people had senses of shame.

Also, yeah, they always are super cringe.

I watch to see if what they make is truly vegan or if it just doesn’t include meat. Usually vegan meals or actually vegetarian and it annoys me no end because I’m allergic to meat. I have to eat actual vegan food and can’t cheat, so I get to trace the provenance of every little part of everything I consume.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
But vegetarian meals contain no meat? I'm confused. Do you mean you are allergic to animal and animal by-products as well?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m allergic to a carbohydrate in mammals. I usually just say “meat” but it’s any mammalian meat or byproducts. Most poultry contains bovine byproducts. The vast majority of foods do (in America). Including tons of supposedly vegan foods. If they’re vegetarian then obviously it doesn’t matter but it’s the vegans I always watch because their food is almost never vegan. You have to be careful about buying produce and any spices, herbs, sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, pasta, milk alternatives, even water. And just tap water isn’t necessarily vegan because the local water authority may use natural charcoal in the filtering process, which is code for incinerated commercial livestock bones.

Eh. Unless they have a medical reason for being vegan, this diet is something they chose. And if they know much about cooking, they already know that it's going to be a significant handicap. I'll be interested in what they make because I know vegan food can be excellent, but I don't root for them purely because they have self-imposed challenges. That'd be a bit like rooting for the guy who, for Reasons, chose to compete in a race with a bowling ball tied to his ankle. You do you, but that's a disadvantage you opted in for.

So do people have to disclose personal information before you deem them worthy?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, here's one of those bad faith comments FS nonnies love to make. You bored, hun?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-06 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
+1 I mostly think they're dumbasses, frankly.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends a lot on the contestant's attitude. Every once in a while, you get those moral superiority vegans who enter into the competition with the express intent to show how superior their vegan lifestyle is or how it's just as good/you wouldn't be able to tell the difference as the dishes with animal products. And I'm always a bit gleeful to see them fail, not because they're vegan but because I can't stand their attitude.
Fortunately the majority is pretty "hi I'm a vegan cook it's just what I do" nowadays and that's great.

Aww, so sweet. :)

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. thank you.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! There are a lot of vegetarian and even vegan things I enjoy, sure-- I mean, if you wanna get technical, Oreos are vegan-- but it's not for me as a full-time thing. But I still almost always root for those contestants because it is an added challenge, not just in making the food, but in getting past potential judge bias!

(Anonymous) 2024-10-06 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently Oreos are manufactured on machines that process dairy ingredients, so if that's a sensitivity for you keep it in mind.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-06 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
And the ground they grow in is mulched by earthworms, fertilized by animal manure, and some of the products fertilized by bees. Wait til you hear about the those tiny single celled animals too. Nothing is vegan, except igneous rocks.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have a similar reaction. They don't necessarily become my favourite but I definitely root for them.
