I'd agree with this, only the most insufferable elements of the video game "self-insert/favourite-pretty-boy-companion" fandoms (i.e., the "my personal playthrough is the only true canonical version of events, and my personal self-insert is the only true canonical player character" elements) are always the over-30s.

As one of them... Yeah, I can't help but to agree. A lot of the young ones treat it like a real sexuality or are very weird about people shipping their "f/o" and lgbt (or even straight) headcanons, etc. There are exceptions to the rule, but the coolest yumes/selfshippers are the ones who know they're an outlier, that character is not actually your partner and people aren't going to care for their OC or self insert/canon stuff.

Yeah, but the few 30+ self-shippers around are really, really awful to deal with. I think because most of them have slipped into OC-not-exactly-a-self-insert territory, meaning that the few left are real doozies.

This reminds me of a 2000s fandom OC shipper who used to say she was possessive of the character she shipped her OC with and only approved of canon/oc ships with him for OCs she liked and would happily criticize OCs she didn't as Mary Sues despite having a past of being harassed for her OC being a Mary Sue (admittedly kinda true tho some of the reactions she got were too far).

I just remember feeling very disappointed/frustrated by her like idk "you should know better/understand how it feels". Like she did revamp her OC a lot but she seemed to learn the wrong lessons from her experience.

(Thats all I feel comfortable saying atm. I dont wanna reveal the fandom).

But the hypocrisy or just the idk the fact she was so okay with doing to others what was done to her because I had been on her side before the revamp feeling like people were really unnecessarily mean to her. To see her go "oh people were right to make fun of me" and do it to other OC creators after almost felt. Idk frustrating

Honestly I'm 40+ and I think self-shipping is extremely embarrassing because it shows a distinct lack of IC/OOC divide. It's one thing when you're 14 and full of hormones and bad judgment, but you should grow out of that.

I don't trust anyone over the age of 16 who is a self-shipper because IME they have absolutely zero boundaries between fiction and reality.

Eh, this is a bit of a nothing-burger. Most under-30 self-shippers I've seen have been chill, and the obnoxious ones have mostly stuck to the TikTok selfship community. I think a lot of your complaints just has to do with the fact that teenagers are annoying sometimes, and they grow out of it pretty quick. - an 18 year old whose been selfshipping since age 13
