No I'm not trying to say that. I do feel sympathetic towards the situation. Like it's sad and shouldn't have happened. But it's a bit harder to feel as emotionally wrecked ? I guess is the better phrasing, about it than the average person who has no personal reason to feel as conflicted about ww2 era Japan and it's military.

If the MC had no connection to the military I'd prob feel differently, but because it's stated and framed by the director that his militaristic/nationalistic pride directly caused the death of his sister, I felt more frustrated with the character more than I felt immensely sad about it. Again he's a kid so it's not like you should really blame him for his actions, but there was more to play than, oh so you don't think civilians should live because of their military. No. I said it felt bittersweet but not as emotionally depressing to me Vs someone (prob American and white) who would feel more guilty and sad about it over everything and hadn't had to listen to what personal family members went through as a result of that same Japanese nationalistic/militaristic pride in similar circumstances that the MC went through (aka losing their house/all belongings and having to face starvation in a camp while dealing with enemy soldiers who have been well documented to have been extremely brutal to prisoners civilian or not).

So if anything, I felt more reflective than depressed about it. It's sad but again, not the saddest movie for me.

A lot of people don't understand this about the movie, to be fair, even though it seemed pretty obvious (to me) and as you said, the director has stated as much in interviews. The boy symbolizes the militarist faction stubbornly refusing to accept what is genuinely, truly, unfair treatment (as Japan absolutely was treated by Western enemies and allies alike, even the League of Nations), starting a hopeless fantasy war over it that they can't possibly win, and getting his sister (Japanese civilians) killed in the process. A lot of people think it's anti-war in general and that the kids are blameless, which the director has said multiple times is a gross misunderstanding.

What's left out though is what's always left out of Japanese war films on the homefront: any allegory of the other damage wrought by Japanese militarism. It's to the point that in this and other such films (e.g., In this Corner of the World) it seems as Japan has been attacked out of nowhere, and for no reason, and that's sad ://///// And you're right, it is sad.

But it's a tiny footnote in special interest of history compared to the THIRTY MILLION PEOPLE WHO DIED IN ASIA at the hands of the Japanese military.

But you're not allowed to bring them up; as per this very discussion thread, the second you bring them up you're accused of whataboutism and justifying innocent deaths and that's not what we're talking about here you must be silent about them they don't matter we're talking about how bad/good America is and Japan is a fellow first world protagonist and its people died and that's sad :////////

I never said anything remotely like this. I said chastizing people for having complicated feelings regarding Japanese war films when personally affected by having family members among the thirty million people who died in Asia as a result of Japanese imperialism (i.e., what this thread is about, what everyone in this thread is talking about) is deranged.

Take a deep breath, and read the words written instead of screaming obscenities into the void. Of course it's bad that children died. I agree! We all agree (except the weird Wehraboo troll below perhaps). But people holding emotional and not always rational, perfectly philosophically equal resentment over the several orders of magnitude more children who died as a result of Japanese war crimes, especially given the way this is never addressed in any meaningful fashion in Japanese war media, is not "bigoted". It's honestly pretty fucked up to imply that it is.

If I had family that suffered at the hands of a certain country's military, I would find it harder to sympathize with people from that country with family connections in that military even if they had done nothing wrong themselves, yeah. I wouldn't go out of my way to act hateful about them, but I would in my heart of hearts find sympathy harder to dredge up.

Emotions: They aren't rational!

Were there any innocent Japanese Civilians? I thought that support for the Empire and Imperial Policy was pretty solid throughout the "civilian" population. I put that in quotes, because that Imperial policy was that every civilian was just a soldier in waiting, either for direct fighting overseas or as a last ditch broomhandle and kitchen knife defender of the homeland? None of that screams innocent or civilian to me, not if they were supportive of that policy. That is why Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the various firebombings were all valid military strategies one valid military targets.

Unlike fucking Dresden or the Ruhr Valley, where the German population was far less evenly supportive of Hitler and there was a well documented internal-German Resistance movement. "Bomber" Harris ought to have been hanged as a War Criminal for those.
