Eh, I'm nearly 40 and it's not for me but OOC isn't just the domain of the self-shippers. Plenty of people make characters wildly OOC when they're in a ship with a canon character - who yes you could argue one half of the ship is often a self-insert by stealth, especially if it's a character with very little personality in canon - but some people are just BAD at writing anyone in character in any scenario.

I'm a little uncomfortable with the idea of age limits on enjoying anything in fandom, even if I find self-shipping cringe, because I think there's too much policing that you shouldn't do XYZ by a certain age already.

My experience has been that the problem isn't OOCness but rather them being overly attached to the character in question and blinding themselves to any flaws the character might have to the point where they can't accept anyone saying anything about the character that isn't 100% positive.

Like, I've run into way too many of those people who would go off on you if you mentioned that the character may have been anything less than a perfect saint in canon.

Yup this is a big problem even if you remove shipping. Some people are attached to their own/a fanon interpretation and it shows in the writing.

(God you’re giving me war flashbacks to being a Loki fan around ten years ago and saying you don’t think he’s mind controlled in The Avengers!)
