Soups and stews

What are your favs? And do you also love dipping bread into the broth like an Orwellian orphan?

This beef and Guinness stew, as well as a regular winter beef casserole, are a favourite among me and my parents. It's quick, easy and deliciously full of flavor.

I've also taken to making her Chinese noodle soup when I'm not feeling well. I add a little sriracha to it tho.

Love hamburger soup, chicken stew, and white chili. Which is totally a stew! The white chili is also super easy (and the only one I got a recipe for).

I love dipping bread in some. However, in chicken soup/stew I add so many saltine crackers, it becomes a non newtonian fluid. Lol. And in regular chili/hamburger stew, I usually add cornbread to it.

All of them, honestly. I really love soup. And my mom makes amazing soup. Some favorites:

Post-Thanksgiving homemade turkey noodle soup. Borscht. Lentil. Split pea. Potato. Onion. Clam chowder. Minestrone. Dumpling soup. Chili.

My grandmother used to make a type of vegetable soup with cream that's called Ängamat. (Transl. "Food of the meadow")
It's cauliflower, sweetpeas in the pod, carrots, scallions, potatoes (optional) and cream.
One version is here: http://annesfood.blogspot.com/2005/09/meadow-food-soup_22.html

I haven't had it in years, but I should really try to make it myself.

I live for soup, and I'm actually kind of glad the Instagram algorithm is showing me a bunch of soup posts right now. I tend to favor creamier soups, especially cream of broccoli. I enjoy creamy tomato soups.

That said, I tend to not like having bread with my soups. I just want to savor the soup itself.

I think it's a knock off of Olive Garden's zuppa toscana, but I wouldn't know because I've never had it. Note: this is much better with Italian sausage instead of breakfast sausage:

Broccoli cheddar, except I tend to add lots more green veggies including edamame for protein and a potato to thicken it, tamari and a parmesan rind for extra umami, a serrano or two for kick, and spinach right as it comes off the heat so it just wilts, and puree it so it's bright green.

This makes it sound healthy. But I add grated sharp white cheddar to my bowl in handfuls, plus, if I don't just dip toasted buttered sourdough in, I make homemade croutons.

Most of my soups sound super (souper?) healthy except they basically get crammed full of cheese, buttered bread, or both, unless there are dumplings instead.

Aside from broccoli cheddar, I make black bean veggie, gigante bean veggie, veggie dumpling (sometimes with fake chicken), leek and potato, and asparagus. I add dill to the leek and potato, lemon zest and a potato for thickener to the asparagus, and spinach to both.

The gigante bean usually has cauliflower and lots of tomato, the black bean usually has purple sweet potato and tomatoes and chipotle. Most of them start with mirepoix and lots of garlic and thyme, but there's usually also bell peppers because I like them.

I would probably say Star Trek is hopeful.

Maybe Due South. Raising Hope was also pretty good. The Good Life (aka Good Neighbors). And I tend to think of As Time Goes By as gentle and comforting comedy, but I suppose it fits.

Lord of the Rings and Tolkien in general. All kinds of dark, but always a sense of hope. Regardless of whether we're talking books or adaptions.

Star Wars. Star Trek. Babylon 5.

Doctor Who is often, though not always, hopeful.

Anne of Green Gables, either books or the miniseries.

The Good Place.

One Piece. It goes to some very heavy and dark places but never in a bleak way. One of the main motifs of the story is the dawn that ends the night and it's very apt.

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, the webnovel. It's very much an "earn your happy ending" type of hope, but I don't think I have ever cried so much over anything in my entire life, nor have I ever felt so loved by a story... The ending of the novel changed me permanently and I encourage everyone to not get scared by the length and give it a go if you're having a rough time.

Frustration with Social Media

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2024-10-08 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I am so frustrated and depressed lately and i know twitter doesn't help. And i wish i could leave it . I wish the good parts would migrate somewhere else. Twitter is just full of so many nasty cruel people it seems and the algorithm will sometimes push them on my feed because Elon thinks their "speech" is especially important.

And just the barrage of people hurling the r-slur around and transphobia and homophobia , not to mention anti's running wild is just so depressing.

Im here unmedicated (still looking for a psychiatrist) and waiting on the world's worst, slowest bg check company and sometimes i end up just napping for large parts of the day bc of being sick of the world after being reminded just how many people out there consider people like me lower than shit for the way our brain works and see no issue with it

Re: Frustration with Social Media

(Anonymous) 2024-10-08 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry. It really is just so fucking frustrating. It's genuinely horrible how awful and evil Elon has made the place. He is a garbage human and he's turned a serviceable website into a vile collection of evil shit. I really do hate his ass.

Luckily a good number of the people I like have migrated onto Bluesky now but a good part of them haven't. The only thing that keeps Twitter even remotely usable now is that I just block anyone the second they look at me funny - anyone who seems even slightly right wing, trollish, wanky, I just immediately block em. Especially anyone who has even slightly bad vibes and a blue checkmark. It also helps that I haven't updated my Twitter app since Elon bought the company, and I have the For You tab disabled on my web browser (using an extension) and a bunch of other stuff disabled too.

I've been there on the sleeping all day because of the world being shit and awful, too. I hope you find a psychiatrist who works for you ASAP - depression fucking sucks and you shouldn't have to deal with that shit.

I'm sorry. I went through this with most social media a few years ago and eventually ended up quitting it all. Which did help, but sometimes I am just so lonely and sad and wish I had an online space like it used to be to go and find happy distractions or even friendly support sometimes.

Also, I feel really dumb asking but what is the r-slur?
