Things in fiction that make you uncomfortable.

For me, it's messy oral sex scenes. Maybe because so many of them are written really badly, or with lots of emphasis on saliva and semen and I got squicked out. This goes double if it involves gagging a penis because I have a super sensitive gag reflex and reading about it makes ME gag a little.

I can't look at arranged marriage AUs. My best friend is from a culture where matchmaking and arranging a marriage is going to be her future in a few years max, she's been putting it off as long as she can. I see them and I just think of her and how much she is dreading it and just get upset these days :/

That's awful. Is she stuck in her country of origin, then?

I hope there are people inside her culture who can give her advice.

When people describe taste during sex scenes. A million times so when rimming is involved and they describe taste and smell.

Honestly, graphic descriptions of penises or other hard things in vaginas. Due to my vaginismus, anything in my vagina is painful. and I feel sympathy pain when reading such stuff. When women are involved, I stick to reading oral sex only.

Body horror gore, gore in general, bestiality.

Designated buttmonkey characters. As in there is one character who all the other characters always insult, and bad things are always happening to them and it's treated like a joke, and the character is either a completely normal decent person or maybe slightly annoying at worst.

I feel this way about Miyuki in Xenosaga 3. She works her ass off and is constantly treated like a screwup by Shion. Even though there are maybe only one or two incidences the player witnesses, and one of them isn't even her fault.

Even Allen got less shit from Shion in Xenosaga 2, and he did get a little dramatic from time to time.

Ooooh, yeah, I can't watch shows or anything like that with this trope in it. It just makes me really sad.

I always end up sympathizing with the butt money and hating the protagonists, whether it's a canon or fic.

This is how I feel about John Walker in FATWS.

poorly written sex is like every other fic, I just backbutton away and forget.

but in published fiction? attempts at writing another culture, be it with fantasy trappings or closer to historical accuracy either way, that full on misses every mark, is wrong wrong wrong did you even research your background culture wrong. it makes me mad that someone jumped through all the hoops to get the book published on paper and into a store/library and yet the story is so bad as to be uncommfortable.

biggest offender to me so far: Guy Gavriel Kay. His Asian-inspired fantasy is so uncomfortably awkward, like he's screaming with every noun and adjective "look how Chinese we are!! Do you get that this is China yet?? HOW ABOUT NOW? CHINA!" It's the very definition of uncomfortable. I couldn't get past chapter 5, I sent it back to the library I was so uncomfortable with his whole mien and presentation. I'll never read another book with his name on it.

Damage to teeth - I take psychic damage. Also, cringe humor. I can't watch a thing where a character is humiliating themselves. The Office is unwatchable to me.

BDSM scenes where there's just casual degradation thrown into a scene that's not *about* degradation, where it often feels out of character. I hate it so much.

And they are never tagged! I like BDSM elements but degradation is my major squick. And it somehow manage to be not in BDSM fics too. They just have some vanilla sex and out of blue you've got "you are such a slut" or something. Guh

+1

I can enjoy it as a kink myself but not out of nowhere. I agree about it feeling OOC when there's no lead up.

Villain apologists. I'm like excuse me, I can think this guy is evil AND want to fuck him at the same time. It doesn't matter what a sad boo hoo backstory he had, literally nothing justifies killing and hurting others. And he's still hot.

On that same topic, when new story tries retconning a villain's or former villain's actions, even though it comes out of left field and sometimes even contracts canon. "BOB SKULLFUCKED ALL THOSE POOR DOGS... OH BUT... UH... SOMEONE ELSE WHO WAS INTO DOG SKULLFUCKING ORDERED HIM TO TO DO IT SO IT'S NOT REALLY HIS FAULT... AND IT WASN'T REALLY THAT MANY... AND SOME OF IT WAS AN ILLUSION... AND THREE OF THOSE DOGS WERE ASKING FOR IT ANYWAY" or shit like that. It seems to be less like adding to the story and more like the writers can't live with the "consequences" of their own canon. JUST LEAVE IT FOR ONCE! And let the audience decide if we can handle the fact that at some point, some shitbastard thought it was a good idea to skullfuck all those dogs. Enough of this "oh, oh! But it really wasn't THAT bad" crap.

Any time pregnancy gets mentioned, even if it's just in a dirty-talk breeding kink way. Mainly because pregnancy squicks me big time but also because I exclusively read m/m porn and the number of fic where just "dirty talk breeding kink" turned into surprise untagged mpreg is way too high.

Untagged kink that the writer doesn't seem to realize is a kink.
