Do you have any examples of this, OP? I’m going over the last 7-8 years of celebs getting caught/called out and can’t think of any where I saw/heard about someone saying that. Entertainment industry isn’t exactly chock-full of ugly people or even average looking people. I can think of anyone except Harvey Weinstein that anyone ever mentioned their physical appearance. And even with him it was very much, “we all figured that had to be happening because why else would any of those gorgeous young women want anything to do with him?”

Are you only including A-list celebs?

No, I’m thinking of any famous person that the average person is likely to recognize their name.

Yeah, I've not seen this particular thing, either.

I have seen famous awful people criticized for their looks, but it's generally people whose awfulness has always been front and centre so it has a real undertone of 'I want to be able to call people ugly, and this person is hated, so I can probably get away with it with them'.

I haven’t even seen that tbh. I hope OP drops in to explain!

OP

The thing is. They are NOT ugly. Just suddenly people coming out of the woodwork saying they always thought they were to feel superior in a "Well, my special snowflake self was NEVER attracted to them anyways", probably giving "normal" people more body issues in the process. (Basically a different facette of the "I always knew something was off with them" thing people do to feel superior when it turns out someone beloved is actually an asshole)

Last I've seen it was on ONTD - not the best place to read comments, I know. And Youtube comments. Which is even worse... I know. u_u

But who are people saying this about?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I've seen it said about Blake Lively, Chris Pratt and Lily Allan. And of course lots of people saying it about authors, musicians etc.

Not OP, but I see it on Stan Twitter all the time. When Jack Harlow was blocking Ariana Grande from #1 on the charts earlier this year, I saw a bunch of people complaining about how ugly he is, which, he’s a little young & scrawny for me, but I don’t think he’d ugly. Same for pretty much every standom - their favorite singer is ~a skinny legend and everyone they don’t like is fat and balding and musty. Big “beauty = goodness” mindset going on there (although that IS what I get for being on Twitter in 2024).

I'm not OP, but a couple of years ago on Tumblr - everyone seemed to be having a huge hate-boner for Ed Sheeran and pretty much 60% of the posts were about how ugly he was and therefore justifiable to hate him (I'm hardly a fan of his work, but I didn't get the hate for his looks other than he's ginger - which I'll have to say it has been a long time since I last saw hatred for ginger people).
