I'm not sure what this is saying. Are you implying it's shallow or impolite to comment on the appearance of someone whose career is majorly, or sometimes entirely, selling their appearance?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I took it more as we all know ugly people are awful, which is annoying trope.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... the secret would be a pretty roundabout way of wording that sentiment. Plus just because people are calling them ugly doesn't mean the celebrity suddenly ceases to be conventionally attractive in real life.

Maybe OP will drop in and clarify.

Those are two different things.

Some celebs have actual talent which has nothing to do with their appearance.

For the ones who make a living specifically off of their appearance, no, it's not rude to comment on it. But it's also not a green light to make mean comments whenever you want just because "well, they're out there, sooooooooo......"

When a celeb who's all about their looks turns out to be an asshole, it's best to criticize them for being an asshole. By going "they showed they're as ugly on the inside as they are on the outside" implies that maybe them being an asshole doesn't bother you as much as their looks do (whether or not that's true).

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that implies that at all? I read that quote and I get "oh, so this celebrity who was of not much value to me as a consumer product because I didn't find them attractive, turned out to be an asshole and therefore even less value to me as a consumer product." or "The fact that they're a dick IRL confirms that this person has no value to me."

I'm not sure why that's interpreted as saying this is not criticizing them for being an asshole, because it sounds like they are to me?

I also think we may have differing versions of what we mean by "celeb." Not all people who are notable or famous are "celebrities" to me. A celebrity to me is someone who sells themselves, the physical person and/or their life/lifestyle, as part of their brand.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems to me the idea is that once it becomes public that a celeb did something awful, people come crawling out of the woodwork commenting on how they always thought the celeb was "ugly", drawing a connection between awful behaviour and looking "ugly".

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe? Tons of them also say stuff like "their music was always shitty" or "I always hated their movies" and "they were always so cringe and tryhard" and stuff too. Usually what they claim to always have thought was shitty was something the celeb in question was trying to sell them (looks, fashion, style, music, movies), so it tends to have some relevance.

OP

Yes, that's what I meant (I'm ESL and did notice that I worded it awkwardly in the comment thread, but I've realized that going back and "correcting" the initial post in a further comment usually doesn't work, so I didn't - no blame to the secret maker(s), they probably don't read the comments under the initial post!).

Why are we insulting their appearance when we could insulting their behavior? What has their appearance to do with anything? It's that annoying "bad person = ugly" trope. People (especially online) already define others and themselves by their looks so much when that's something you can't control, unlike your behavior.

Huh, haven't seen Ugly Duchess/Grotesque Old Woman in ages.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Did you forget to give her a tip while she was leaving your abode?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. I told her to stay away from your momma.

Do you have any examples of this, OP? I’m going over the last 7-8 years of celebs getting caught/called out and can’t think of any where I saw/heard about someone saying that. Entertainment industry isn’t exactly chock-full of ugly people or even average looking people. I can think of anyone except Harvey Weinstein that anyone ever mentioned their physical appearance. And even with him it was very much, “we all figured that had to be happening because why else would any of those gorgeous young women want anything to do with him?”

Are you only including A-list celebs?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I’m thinking of any famous person that the average person is likely to recognize their name.

Yeah, I've not seen this particular thing, either.

I have seen famous awful people criticized for their looks, but it's generally people whose awfulness has always been front and centre so it has a real undertone of 'I want to be able to call people ugly, and this person is hated, so I can probably get away with it with them'.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven’t even seen that tbh. I hope OP drops in to explain!

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

The thing is. They are NOT ugly. Just suddenly people coming out of the woodwork saying they always thought they were to feel superior in a "Well, my special snowflake self was NEVER attracted to them anyways", probably giving "normal" people more body issues in the process. (Basically a different facette of the "I always knew something was off with them" thing people do to feel superior when it turns out someone beloved is actually an asshole)

Last I've seen it was on ONTD - not the best place to read comments, I know. And Youtube comments. Which is even worse... I know. u_u

I'm not OP, but a couple of years ago on Tumblr - everyone seemed to be having a huge hate-boner for Ed Sheeran and pretty much 60% of the posts were about how ugly he was and therefore justifiable to hate him (I'm hardly a fan of his work, but I didn't get the hate for his looks other than he's ginger - which I'll have to say it has been a long time since I last saw hatred for ginger people).

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really notice people saying this, but most celebrities are at least above-average looking, or they probably wouldn't be celebrities (unless they're like...amateur youtubers or something, as opposed to A-list actors).

Not everyone is everybody's flavor, though. It seems odd to link the person turning out to be shitty with not being impressed with their looks. Like, those things aren't related.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
99.9% of YouTubers aren’t celebrities, though. Zero influencers are celebrities. Celebs don’t have to be a listers but just because maybe 10,000 people are aware of and enjoy someone’s content it doesn’t make them a celeb.

Disney Morality. if you're not very good looking you're automatically evil, ESPECIALLY if you're female.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-13 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO it's simply that in general, people are shallow.

It's easy to insult someone by insulting their looks.
People probably feel the jab is even stronger if the person is conventionally attractive ("yeah, you think you're soooo good looking but I'm here to tell you you are actually ugly") or has at least one trait society deems "ugly" ("I know you're insecure about this flaw you have so let me affiem this insecurity of yours").

I know we all have insecurities but it is a little...odd to me that people go really hard on insulting people's looks and bodies when said celebrities are being accused of/caught doing terrible things.
I tend to think it's because people are really shallow and/or unwilling to deal with their own shallow insecurities and project it by insulting others.
