I'm afab (identify as agender) and have been using pads since my first period. The idea of something going up there and being wedged squicks me out, so I've never used tampons.

I wonder if this is linked to how uncomfortable I am over the idea of hetero sex. Never mind my pregnancy phobia.

Not fandom, I don't think. But for the record, I never used tampons either. I found them painful due to my various issues. I always used pads, at least when I had periods.
