I mean, you could always try going for reddit readings/fan voicovers/public domain material narration on any video platform to try it out in front of an audience?

DA
Also podfics. A lot of people would glad to hear podfics

(Anonymous) 2024-10-13 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
dude i feel this in my SOUL

Do podfics! If you have a character you particularly like, find POV fics and see if you can do them.

I have blanket permission on my fics for podficcers, and many others do too. Might be a good opportunity to see if you enjoy doing it with no pressure.

If you don't live in certain parts of fancom, this means:

A while ago (10 years? more?) there was a small podfic revolution, including some podficcers saying that they are both uneasy about doing a podfic of someone's work without permission, but simultaneously too shy to actually ask the writer if podfic would be welcome (because What If That Turned Into A Whole Thing, Now I Have A Deadline, etc.). So a concept was born: blanket permission statements in one's AO3 profile, to assure podficcers that they would be welcome to produce the fic as a podfic, with any requirements, restrictions, caveats -- without having to interact. So if you encounter some fic you'd like to produce, look at the author's profile and see if there's a statement like that posted. (And if not, you could ask if the author is open to podfics and if so, if they'd consider posting a blanket permission statement on their profile -- or just ask if they'd be open to you doing a podfic of that work.)

Why not take some voice acting classes?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Admittedly I don't know the current audition-to-role route, but what I've picked up by osmosis is:

- you need a demo, so doing podfic, vtube, whatever, where you have a recording of your voice doing a thing even if it's just a homemade digital demo of you performing is valuable. That gives you a record you can shop around when auditions are open

- even well-known established VAs who've been doing voicework for over 20 years have to audition for roles. And, even in the current sphere where Funimation is the only game in dub-town, actors still have to search for available roles and audition. CritRole is run by VAs who still auditioned seasoned actors for roles. Rob Fucking Paulson still has to audition in a world where Peter Cullen was replaced by an MCU Chris for the iconic Optimus Prime role. Find out where and how you audiion for roles and send your demo. SEND. YOUR. DEMO.

I made the mistake of mentioning on reddit that I missed the live radio-DJ experience despite being out of radio since 1999 and got dozens of suggestions of alternate venues where that skill is still valuable, including things like podcasts, Twitch livestreams, etc. If an old radio guy can find new venues for those skills, a potential VA can do it! You need a demo to start, to serve as your portfolio, and then search up where and how to audition. Even if you just get small roles in livestream casts, you'll still make more money and feel proud of your accomplishments vs doing nothing for no one.

Thank you for this comment. I'm not the OP and this isn't specifically a field I'm interested in but the last part struck a chord with me. I'm trying to get more bold about trying new things in my fields even if they don't work out or just work out a little bit, and you're very right that "smaller" accomplishments feel better than doing nothing for no one.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-14 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
whatever your field of choice, DO IT. take a chance! I've failed more careers than succeeded, and I've found fulfillment in volunteer opportunities in fields where I thought 20+ years ago I'd get a degree or job and didn't. the wonderful thing to internalize is that the world is a lot bigger than you assumed it could be, and there are things to do that won't be on any college board's career listing or guidance counselor's radar - things that fill you with a sense of accomplishment that can either lead to more or just be satisfying on their own. shit, nostalgia has proven to to be lucrative, so even if your claim to fame now is a bit part that paid your rent for a year, in 10 years you'll be stupid popular for what feels like no reason! when you're old and turning gray you might be the person talking about how back in the day you did X and your young peers will go "no way, really?" even if it doesn't pan out, you have something in your proverbial backstory that makes you more courageous than people who never tried to get out of their box, a badge for a life well-lived. maybe I'm maudlin bc I'm turning 50 soon but shit, having life experiences even if they don't turn into a 60-year career or an award of merit or a million-dollar salary are still valuable in their own right, and nothing says you can't use that experience to revisit later when you retire or need a new line of work.

this is equally to anon below and anyone else reading. go out there and have some life! seek advice, even if the end result is "I have researched the process and decided this isn't for me." fuck Yoda's do or do not, there is in fact a try.

I love how supportive and informative this comment is!

I feel this secret so much. I’ve been told I have a cute, child-like voice, so I think I’d make a good voice actor based on just that lol

You could podfic a story you like on Ao3 to get a feel for it and see how good you are, anon!

I hope you go for it, OP - good luck!

This reminds me of the time a young cashier at a store randomly told me I should look into voice acting or narrating audio books, because "you have a really nice voice." It was an extremely nice thing for him to say!

You might want to check out ProZD on YouTube / prozdvoices on Tumblr? He's also Asian with a general American accent, had no idea what the fuck he was doing when he first got into voice acting and basically got his foot in the door through sheer hard work, and he has videos/FAQs he gets from people about how to become a voice actor and tips he has about preparing demo reels, auditioning, taking classes, etc., plus also had a podcast where he interviews a lot of voice actors who also came up in his Millennial/YouTuber generation. Things have changed a bit since then, but it might give you a place to start.

As people above said, you need to create enough material through your own personal projects for a demo reel, you need to apply to positions, and you need to get your name out there / be on various voice directors' radars. Nowadays, being very active on a social media site that allows you to post your amateur projects and go viral every so often will help with that.
