(Anonymous) 2024-10-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)- you need a demo, so doing podfic, vtube, whatever, where you have a recording of your voice doing a thing even if it's just a homemade digital demo of you performing is valuable. That gives you a record you can shop around when auditions are open
- even well-known established VAs who've been doing voicework for over 20 years have to audition for roles. And, even in the current sphere where Funimation is the only game in dub-town, actors still have to search for available roles and audition. CritRole is run by VAs who still auditioned seasoned actors for roles. Rob Fucking Paulson still has to audition in a world where Peter Cullen was replaced by an MCU Chris for the iconic Optimus Prime role. Find out where and how you audiion for roles and send your demo. SEND. YOUR. DEMO.
I made the mistake of mentioning on reddit that I missed the live radio-DJ experience despite being out of radio since 1999 and got dozens of suggestions of alternate venues where that skill is still valuable, including things like podcasts, Twitch livestreams, etc. If an old radio guy can find new venues for those skills, a potential VA can do it! You need a demo to start, to serve as your portfolio, and then search up where and how to audition. Even if you just get small roles in livestream casts, you'll still make more money and feel proud of your accomplishments vs doing nothing for no one.
