I get that sometimes. Like "waaah, people get mad at me as soon as they ~randomly find out~ I'm a big fan of [controversial or problematic celebrity/canon/series]!"

Oh really. How did they find out? Following you around with their mind-reading abilities? Have we found the most persecuted person on earth?

Help, help, I can't openly express my opinions without other people openly expressing their opinions! They shouldn't be allowed to do that! It's not fair!

I don't mind people having an opposing opinion. It's when someone is smug and/or snide about it that it gets on my nerves. Even if they're completely right.

Oh. You are the one. Fuck off and die somewhere. Alone. In a corner.

IDK to me, this is kind of like...well, have you considered that you are free to express your opinions, but why is your expectation for the person you're responding to to react in a way you would prefer?

Not saying those who respond with negativity/defensiveness are "right" to react the ways they do, but IMO in these situations there is no right or wrong party.
Someone made a comment, someone else responds to engage in conversation. How that plays out is dependent on the personalities of parties involved.
IMO having been on both sides of such discussions, it tends to be clash of POVs.

I tend to choose to stop engaging if I feel like the person I'm engaging with is being antagonistic/smug. Because it's either, you want to get to know my POV or you think I'm wrong and you want to prove me wrong.
And I hate being placed in win/lose situations when that wasn't my intent at all (as the comment creator or as the respondent).

If I want nuance, I will engage when I want that.
