It is more about the comparison to people your age who have not gone gray/white (or dye their hair).

I'm really bad at ages, so I'm no good at this kind of comparison, but I will say I am often assumed to be 10-20 years younger than I am, even with the gray hair. It always amuses me to no end when people are like "Well, when you get to be in your mid 30s..."

I was this same for most of my life, but my 40s has been rough for this! When I was 30 people mistook me for a highschooler, but ever since I hit 40 I have been crashing and catching up fast. It has been harder on my self esteem than I thought it would be lol

It's a combination of factors (greying hair, balding, weight gain, wrinkles, posture, mobility) in a great tapestry of aging lmao. I am the opposite of you - I am (unfortunately) good at guessing ages (this offends a lot of people! if you guess their age exactly and they are over 30! I know better now and always politely say at least 5-10 years younger than I think), the only times I've been way off are younger people who've led really hard lives and aged quickly. But older people who look younger don't really trip me up. E.g., Tom Cruise has had the best skincare and plastic surgery that money could buy, but his neck shows how old he is. Otoh, some people seem to think anyone who is middle-aged and even remotely fit is much younger, but that has nothing to do with it - a fit middle-aged person still looks nothing like a fit young person.
