I think it's a bit of both - when it's gay men that are tokens, even if they're supposedly in a relationship and openly gay, their partner is either never on screen or they're never doing anything romantic/sexual together. We just know he's gay because he says so, makes jokes about liking men, and is usually really flamboyant.

When it's a couple that's actually romantic/sexual on screen and allowed to have a gay romance, it's usually conventionally attractive lesbians.

"actually romantic/sexual on screen and allowed to have a gay romance"

I'm queer and definitely want to see gay romance, but I don't want to see sex scenes regardless of gender. You can do things to show characters are a couple without showing them having sex.

Cool? I don't really want to see graphic sex either but you rarely see gay male couples being romantic with each other or exploring their feelings of romance as a ship develops, even. You can show sexual attraction and interest or have UST between characters without having NC-17 sex scenes. The issue is we usually don't get any of the other stuff either.

Just hi hey here's my bf that existed all along that we never mentioned or only ever mentioned in passing, here's us standing next to each other for a while while not actually being intimate emotionally or anything. Representation!

AYRT

No, I get it. There's a lot of stuff in between graphic sex scenes and just standing next to each other saying they're a couple. Sorry for the confusion, I probably worded it badly. I just want gay couples given the same level of development/focus/screen time as straight couples.
