I'm not them, but I'm guessing they just worded it weird. I don't know if it's technically "marketing", but his general persona/reputation is as a midwestern dude, although I always see people calling him a midwestern dad, not grandpa. He's not a grandpa, his daughter is just out of college and his son is barely 18, if that (I know fairly recently he said he was 17, but I'm not sure if he's had a birthday since; I'm pretty sure he'll turn 18 this year).

Anon above me has it right. Call it PR, call it marketing, call it whatever you want - his campaign is putting forward a specific image of him, which is essentially the same as a marketing team or PR team would for a brand.
