I interpreted it as mages having certain ways of thinking totally hammered out of them during their (very much abusive) training leading to this. Like they mentally flinch away from anything that even smells of technology, but other stuff is fine. It just makes me more annoyed by the MC in the sequel series being able to use magic despite a lack of this training. Gawd, I hate that sequel series so much.
