Parking being back in only baffles me! Was there an obvious reason for this?

NAYRT and I don't drive, but in scouts I was taught it as an emergency preparedness thing, it's faster to get out or evacuate if necessary.

It’s no more or less dangerous to back into a space as it is to pull into it. But it’s far more dangerous to back out of a space than it is to drive out of it. This is no less true with backup cameras sensors, which won’t see or detect anything small that enters the space. But if you drive out, you are far more likely to detect if a toddler runs up to the front of your car because even if your head is turned, you will see the movement with your peripheral vision.

DA - I've only seen this at hotels or apartment buildings where parking front-in means your headlights are facing directly in someone's window. This was probably slightly less of an issue before everyone had giant LED headlights. Taillights are smaller and red. The people on the other side of the window will still see them, but may be spared the view of their own retinas.

In some countries that's just how you do things. One of my previous bosses was Japanese and he would always back into parking spaces because that's how people park in Japan and so that was how he learned.
