IDK, I find the fandom chat boring and repetitive almost immediately. I just wanna chat with some ppl with similar interests. For some place like tumblr, I agree with you 100%, I don't want to know your personal lives, I'm just selecting for the 1% of ppl with good takes. But discord, it gets boring like that way too fast.

And for those of us who make actual friends via fandom, I'm glad that Discord has the tools for you to do that, so you don't get insta-yeeted from the server due to trying to make everyone else shut up about their personal lives.

Same. I've made lots of actual friends via fandom Discords. Heck, I met my current BFF in a Discord for the mobile game we both play! Now we have weekly voice chats and we're planning to meet up IRL at some point since it turns out she lives less than an hour away from where my parents are.

The thing that's bothered me about so many servers is when the owners have their own exclusive channels that serve as diaries. It just gives me the feeling that they're just using the fandom in order to gain their own sense of microcelebrity.

Where's that one comic from Tumblr that's like, a bunch of stick figures at a table going "Video games!" "Video games!" "Video games!" And then one of the stick figures vomits up some FUCKED UP SHIT and everyone at the table is like woah what the fuck. And then it cuts to six months later and three of them are vomiting, one of them is like "I want to try salvia!" and the last one is timidly going "video games?"

Like, congratulations, you just described why insulated fandom Discords are insufferable for anyone who actually wants to discuss the canon. Except you're framing it as a positive for some reason?

I don't understand. If those other channels didn't exist in the first place, and discussion was kept on the topic of video games, there'd be no place to spew unrelated fucked up shit or else they'd be banned.

If they didn't exist, OP wouldn't have to ignore them.

Because people make friends and acquaintances through these places and having everything isolated by topic and banning LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE just makes an unhealthy little box where it's easy to make everyone into your prop for fandoms.

I don't understand how that's relevant to the comic described, where the spreading vomit was the problem. If no vomit, what's the problem?

Do you have this comic?
