I've honestly never understood the concept of self-shipping because the idea of breaking the IC/OOC boundary in fiction just makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Like, the whole reason I enjoy fiction is that it's NOT real and can't/won't ever be real and so you can write about all sorts of things that couldn't be possible or would be terrible if they actually happened in real life. The moment you start breaking that barrier is just a big "abort abort" to me.
