Media where everything is terrible, everyone is terrible, there is no one to root for, and everyone and everything is miserable. Clearly some people really like that, but I just don't get it.

Well, in my case, if there's enough dark humor, I might enjoy it for that. But nobody will end up being my favorite.

To me, sometimes this kind of story comes with its own catharsis; it can also make for some of the most effective cautionary tales imo.

Okay, that I get. Because I do like dark stuff, dark can be catharsis for me, I just personally need someone to root for.

Those are different points, though. Like, everyone in City of Stairs is terrible except the guy who dies at the start, but some of them work in a direction that could make the setting less terrible in the end.

You are right. Honestly, mostly I just need someone to root for. I'm so over antiheroes and media where everyone is evil, it is just that the character we're following is maybe slightly less so.
