I'm sure there are sane fans, but there's this segment of the fandom that's nuttier than squirrel poop. It doesn't help that the system encourages (or at least, doesn't really discourage) this obsessive behavior until it's too late. The business likes wildly supportive fans, because they do promo for free. That's great until you have fans mobbing actors at the airport, stalking them to their hotels, trying to steal their personal info, getting psycho over their fave dating someone who's never good enough, getting into ugly fights over top billing, getting toxic about who's too ugly to star with their fave, who's too fat, who's too old, etc.
