Physical or Digital?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-26 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Which do you prefer for your media (books, games, etc)?

Music I like digital, but basically everything else I want to hold in my grubby little hands.

Digital everything for the convenience, but a lot of it has all its obvious major content-as-a-subscription flaws.

So I pirate almost everything I know I want to keep anyway.

Digital for pretty much everything (except games, I don't play games). I resisted for a long time, but now I much prefer ebooks to physical books just because you can fit so many of them on an ereader/tablet/phone. I used to have to take a whole extra suitcase for books when I traveled but now I don't. Music definitely digital, I don't own any physical copies of anything. And I'm not a huge movie person, but when I do want to watch a movie, streaming is much easier (I don't even own a bluray/dvd player).

I do have some physical books and DVDs from before everything was digital that are special to me (special editions, signed copies, etc.) but everything else I had physical copies of were donated in my last move.

Books I vastly prefer reading in physical form, but the insane frustration of trying to store physical books means that I do read a lot of stuff digitally.

Music I'm all digital. Same with TV and movies although really I probably should bite the bullet and get my go-to TV shows on DVD.

I get my (physical) books from the library and only buy the ones I love or know I will want to reread. I dont have the space otherwise!

Physical books, and physical videogames 100%. I'll usually go for digital movies, but I keep favourites on DVD, and digital music, although I'm trying out CDs again now I've found my old re-writable CD drive.

Physical. I'll convert it to digital if I want, but if I paid for it I had better own it. If I can't find a physical copy, I'll pirate.

That is how I feel. I have had too many digital copies of things just magically disappear. I want to own it. And I want to be able to read my books and pay my games without depending on electricity or the internet.

What games can you play without electricity? Other than board games, I guess, but physical vs. digital don't apply to those.

ayrt

lmao I should have worded that better. The electricity was for the books.

For day-to-day convenience like walking to work/doing chores, I'll do music digitally. My late Dad left a gigantic collection of vinyl and I do like the physical ritual of unpacking one, playing it and looking at the sleeve art and bonus stuff. Some vinyls are just a work of art.

For books, I'm strictly physical. I like the pagey turny and the paper smell.

Physical for everything.

Physical for games, digital for everything else. I just don't have the space to store tons of physical stuff. I rarely read books/watch movies or TV shows more than once anyway, so there's really no reason for me to buy physical copies of them instead of just rent them digitally or stream them.

Digital for everything except books. I do have lots of digital books, but I still prefer print.

A bit of both - although a lot of digital music that I have are either backed up onto usbs or on my Mp3 players (because I haven't left 2009 and couldn't be bothered to figure out how spotify works). But I also buy CDs when I can and rip them into mp3 files for my players too.
It is awesome to go on sites like youtube to listen to new music for free, but otherwise I have zero intentions to ever pay for streaming services.

But my my own personal thing against streaming services is just the fact that the very few times that my friends DID give me access to their accounts on Netflix and Disney+ - I literally just watched one show on each platform before they were no longer available to me (Just Gravity Falls on D+ and the first idk 8-ish series of RuPaul's Drag Race as well as the Queer Duck movie before the latter got removed from the site).
Otherwise I usually watch dvds or whatever comes up on freeview tv/free streaming sites. Even though I have bought new dvds, there's just been a big influx of dvds being thrown out or sold cheaply second-hand so I've had a lot to look through in recent years.

Digital because I don't live in place with room enough for physical stuff, and I don't like having too much stuff in my space anyway. I just keep some of my favorite books and the few physical games I bought because that was cheaper. I also prefer reading books on my Kindle because I can make the way it's printed consistent and suited to my needs. I love the feel and smell of books but nothing beats comfort imo. Same for music. Vinyls are awesome but vinyls are expensive and take too much space. I have all my music on an hard drive.

This is a big thing for me. I don't use a Kindle anymore (although I have one), because I realized I preferred reading on my tablet, and found an app I like much better than the official Kindle app (because you can customize almost everything), and my favorite thing is that I can use my favorite font so things stays consistent across every book I read.
