I did not know this was a thing people did until embarrassingly late into my fandom days. Like, I knew people projected onto one of their pairings characters and I knew self insert Mary Sues existed, but I didn't make the full connection that people were actually imagining themselves in those roles and shipping themselves with their faves. In retrospect it really doesn't make sense how I missed that.

But hey, OP apparently it is super common and normal so you're definitely not alone or weird (even though I personally don't get it).
