One could argue that if the characters seem OOC then it is not in fact great writing.

I love AUs but there are so many that are just wildly out of character that I could see if you weren't into them in the first place it would seem nigh impossible to find the good ones.

I like AUs but the most important part of them is the character work and the further away from the source material the stronger the character work needs to be to feel right and in character.

Which is even more fun and frustrating because 'in character' can vary highly depending on your pov on the character in the first place.

So, I feel you. I read AU anyway, but I feel you.

Transcript: I'm pretty sure this one writer who focuses on a particular canon character is just writing laundered self-inserts.

(Reasons include, among other things, occasional editing errors where the narration slips into first-person when the fic is normally third-person.)

Nothing wrong with that, I just wish real self-inserts got remotely the same level of respect.

The animated JL/JLU was also my first time really interacting with DC canon... I like Diana/Bruce too because of it, but mostly it cemented Wally as my Flash (John was also my favourite GL until Guy because of the show).
