sorry to harsh your squee, nonny, but my inner poor person is aghast at the food waste. pumpkin is so good to cook with (simmered in soy sauce, baked in a pie) and feeds me and my pets. the one thing about halloween that makes me sad is all the waste of just carving a tasty gourd to leave to rot.

Small pumpkins are good for making pies. I usually use a few of them to make jack-o-lanterns and then afterward puree them and make pie/freeze it for later use.

I was under the impression big pumpkins weren't as good for cooking, so I don't use those, but the squirrels do eat a lot of them.

AYRT—the big jack o' lantern ones aren't great eating; they're bred just for carving and are stringy, like even waterier spaghetti squash. I tried roasting and pureeing one into soup once and it didn't even really bulk out the other ingredients, it was so watery.

Mostly I feed them to my hens after, and compost what they don't finish, although I do sometimes keep and roast some seeds for me. I may try making pipián this year, since not shelling the seeds first is less work.

The big flat ones sold as ornamentals, I use as decorations and then eat. Most of them were bred for food, and left whole some keep for months. I'm vegetarian and I'll stuff one for Thanksgiving, and I make soup and roast them and stuff. I saw a mention of candying them recently so maybe I'll try that.

I keep trying to grow out seeds from the tasty ones, but the yard mostly doesn't have enough sun and the spots that do are next to the sidewalk, so people just steal them.

I grew up o a farm, and we always painted our pumpkins because they were food. So, carving is weird to me?

A lot of the type of pumpkins people carve are not good for eating. But also, in many places they go to local farms or shelters etc to feed various animals.

But also also, every holiday tradition has waste. Anything done for trafition and fun is waste. Just let people have their fun in this miserable world without piling on guilt.
