There used to be different terms for these different aus - canon divergence (a canon event changes), Elseworlds (the entire setting is different like a 19th century vampire AU), and fusions (the characters of canon A are in the world of canon B, with or without the characters of canon B). But it's all kind of merged into AU.

To me those are all just different types of AUs. AUs seems like the overarching term for all of them.

Yeah, they are all different types of AUs. But there used to be terms to talk about each kind rather than having to explain what you mean by AU.

This is such a banal statement. It's like saying, "to me Camrys and Corvettes are just different types of cars. 'Cars' seems like an overarching term for all of them." Or, "to me pineapples and oranges are just different types of fruit. 'Fruit' seems like an overarching term for all of them."

I was responding to someone who doesn't see them all as AUs. SO no it isn't.

This is the first clause in their comment:

"There used to be different terms for these different aus"

Seems clear that they do see them all as different types of AUs.

To hear everyone in this thread tell it, it comes across as if trying to make distinctions between them is bad and/or silly.
