(Anonymous) 2024-10-31 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)That so much fanfic literally does this by filing off serial numbers and publishing as original fiction, and nobody notices unless they've been told that's what it is, only proves the point.
I suspect this is one of the reasons people write these types of AUs. They're hoping their fics will get popular enough for them to be used to break into original fiction.
