I don't despise them but I am often left cringing or just disappointed. But yeah, love me a Musical and I have my hopes for musical episodes but am often left disliking them.

Sometimes things just don't click with us, despite there being all the ingredients we like.

OP, what about TV musicals?

Anyway, I don't think it's that weird. A lot of musical episodes fail to capture the magic of actual musicals.

Same, same. I console myself with the knowledge that outside of fandom, most viewers seem to dislike musical episodes, too.

Hmm.

I liked Galavant, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, and the first few episodes of Smash. And yet, I'm picking up what you're putting down, because most one-off musical episodes strike me as odd or cringeworthy or both (Grey's Anatomy, ohmigod, why did you do that?). If anyone feels the need to argue with me, please don't cite Once More with Feeling. If it worked for you, that's great, but I actively avoided it, despite watching most of that show's seasons. My exception is Psych and I will die on the Jamaican Inspector Man hill.

I always skip Once More with Feeling. That and Superstar, the one where Jonathan is a celebrity, are the only ones I can’t stand to watch. Every other episode has at least one redeeming moment.

For me either they work well, or they really, really don't and I think the chance of it being the latter is much higher than the former. It's hard to make them work tonally with the rest of a show and it takes a skilled writing team to make it fit.

I get it. I like musicals too. I also like film noir, and whenever there's a "noir" episode of something, it's a really shallow version of what film noir is. There are fedoras, they make it black and white, and its version of "hardboiled" dialogue is usually something really cliche and cringeworthy. It's sort of just wearing a costume of what it is, rather than being the actual thing, and I think it's the same with musical episodes. And that can be okay, it's good to have a bit of fun with things, but I don't enjoy it the same way.

I rather liked the noir eps of CSI and CSI New York.

I like some of them and dislike others. Nothing comes close to the Buffy one, though. Once More With Feelings just set the bar too high to match.

I love it and had the soundtrack in my car for years!

Also love Moonlighting's musical interludes.

I just love that this secret goes before Buffy secret.
Also I fucking hate Once More, With Feeling - I don't like it and thanks to it musical episodes are popular. Guh.
And yes, I love Galavant, I like musicals. Musical episodes - nah. Well, maybe the Magicians because they were always just like that.

I really did enjoy Once More With Feeling and often scream-sing the first song when playing Persona 3 for some reason (I do get it but it's also a random thing to do). But the episode that set the bar the highest is The Bitter Suite and I can't believe how forgotten it has become over the years. I have only seen about two episodes of Grey's Anatomy and one of them was the musical episode and it really was as terrible as everyone said.

Yes, the Bitter Suite is great! I have a soft spot for Lyre Lyre Hearts on Fire, too, though that one is not *as* good. Still love it for the camp and the ridiculousness and Gabrielle in that silly go-go dancer outfit.

I also enjoyed Once More With Feeling but I can also see how it would turn people off.

Musical episodes are a kind of thing that...IDK, I just don't think they're always a necessary thing. Most of my shows did not have musical episodes and were none the worse for it.
