What kind of villains do you prefer? Based on the post above this.

Evil for the sake of evil? Tragic backstory? Mindless evil? Evil because its fun? Noble goals, but evil way to get there?

All of the above. I don't think one of them is better than the other, I just want to see good, interesting versions. Any of the categories can be fun to watch, depending on how the character is written.

Remember Ming the Merciless from the old Flash Gordon movie? That kind. The kind who calls himself The Merciless and subscribes to Evil Overlord monthly.

I love OG Skeletor and Starscream, and the Eric Roberts version of The Master from Doctor Who. I don't need a baddie with a pathetic excuse or sad childhood, I want a murderous bastard with an evil sense of humour and a wicked turn of phrase. Evil, but goddamn they are stylish with it.

A good evil villain can be really fun, you bring up Starscream, I enjoy a lot a OG Decepticons overall.

Depends on what the story is. I hate it when you get a villain inappropriate for the story, it just makes the hero seem like a bully or an idiot.

honestly the only kind I don't like is full on tragic backstory. Not only because it's been done to death, but because a villain plays a role that can be stupidly negated by the tragic backstory, so now the story has to twist itself in knots to still justify defeating the villain or otherwise not giving them a chance. Good ideas bad execution still leaves the villain a proper villain.

I'm cool with a tragic backstory that doesn't excuse a villain. They should still be a villain. It is woobifying I don't like. Evil actions aren't justified by a tragic backstory.

I like operatic evil supervillains who are insane and over-the-top and seem to treat being a supervillain as an art form.

I like competent, down-to-earth villains who are clearly villains and are in it for themselves and are willing to do awful things to further their own interests, but are also pragmatic and in touch with reality and willing to ally with the heroes when it serves their own interests - villains who get things done.

And I like really awful, despicable, hateful-human-being villains who are just completely terrible and everything they do just makes the world a worse place but in a normal, boring, human way.

I like villains that are truly convinced that they are the good guys and will be proven right once everything settles.

I like it even more when it turns out they were right.
