Yep. The problem is then they go "they're calling me a Nazi for accidentally saying something offensive out of ignorance, or for making a just-a-joke that failed to land, or not realizing this conspiracy theory I believe is rooted in antisemitism, and I'm not a Nazi. So those liberal people must be hysterical. They're also calling Trump a rapist and a felon and a Nazi and an antisemite and they're probably being hysterical about him too."

It's easier to do that and dismiss everyone else that calls you a bad thing, than reflect on your actions and thought patterns.

I'm not even saying this to be insulting or anything. It's just what happens. It is simply easier to do that, because self-reflection is hard work.

Oh, I agree. It's very black or white thinking and the person doesn't get closer to understanding the issue. They don't get that multiple things can be true at the same time.

Person said a punching-down Nazi joke AND
Person is not a Nazi AND
Person is uninformed/ignorant and not doing enough to actively oppose Nazi thinking/Nazi ways AND
We are frustrated at this because Nazis are emboldened by those who spread their hate, even if the person is uninformed/ignorant and it is not their intent

Take this and apply to basically any marginalized group with slightly different terms.

Yup.
