Yes, please. I live in a blue area of a pretty red state, and things are tense right now.

I expect the volume of threads about this particular election will die down soon enough but I would lean yes at least for a little while. Maybe longer considering how chaotic the first 4 years of Trump were because there's bound to be more eventually.

And also because, often the topics discussed should really have content warnings and people don't do that.

One thing I am NOT doing this time is obsessing over the stupid things he says. I read the NYT daily and that's enough attention to what's happening without wasting time on Twitter talking about him.

I wonder how long I can go without hearing more than a snippet of him talking before I rush to change a channel? Can it be four years? Maybe.

I think it would be best to do it for a while longer still. I wouldn’t be on FS without this thread this week tbh, so thank you. I only saw this comment because I immediately scrolled down to make sure this thread was here.

I wouldn't mind that. Sometimes it gets in the way of fandom discussions and can be tiresome to scroll through when I'm not in the mood for political discussions, and it could help shut down trolls who bring up unrelated political situations on secrets.

Possible downsides could be limiting political discussions where they naturally arise (examples would be a secret that involves politics RPF, a secret that is about how politics affect a fandom issue, or a secret about a currently politically controversial fandom because those all normally bring up a political discussion). Fandom and politics are not 100% separate, and I don't think expecting all political subjects to stay out of secrets or general would work, since they are often on-topic. You did already say that the thread would be for purely non-fandom news/politics which sounds like the right approach to me, like if people just want to chat about current events, debate a political issue, or are derailing a secret thread, moving to a politics thread would make sense, since those who aren't here to discuss it can skip it.

I think as long as you are not too quick to shut down naturally occurring political discussions elsewhere (that don't get out of hand with trolling or drama), the thread could remain helpful, and I've definitely appreciated it the past few days. I'm okay with it if you don't make it a regular thing but I would be cool with it and can see definite upsides. Thanks for all you do as the mod.

I for one appreciate it being separate so I can avoid it when I'm not mentally ready. Given I deal with it my whole day at work, it is nice to have a fandom place. But I also like having a place to vent. So having politics as a separate thread, at least for a while, is nice.

This is what I was thinking, it gives people a place to vent/argue about emotional topics while letting people who are not feeling up to seeing stuff like that avoid it easily.

I think the need for it will die down eventually, but for the near future, sure? Not everyone is up for a politics discussion, which is totally understandable. And it helps organize all the various subthreads in one tidy location. Thanks for doing this, BTW!

Though it would be doubly nice if people used the Subject line too, so I know which subthreads to avoid or go to as well. But you can't do anything about that, that is just a personal vent ;)

Yes, please. It lets me avoid these topics when I need to, and I can deal with them when I'm mentally ready. I live in an area that is going to be hit hard by the new regime.

Sure. Some days I'm done with politics, but other days it's good to have an outlet.
