JB really is the best Sherlock but I think Vasily Livanov was a very, very close second. And I think the Russian series was overall better than Grenada, much as it pains me to say. Grenada came out just as I was getting into Holmes so it’s always been my favorite. I didn’t see Vasily’s Sherlock until about 15 years ago and was shocked at how good it was!

I've heard about the Russian adaptation and this is 100% a Me Problem but I cannot get over the whole speaking in Russian thing. It's such a very British story and setting that the cognitive dissonance is too much.

AYRT
It definitely takes some getting used to! And I can totally understand not being able to get used to it at all. I had to be in the mood to watch the first few times I tried.

I have to re-set my brain for it; Holmes is far kinder than I imagine him (though to be fair it's a long time since I read the canon). I like the arts and crafts\cubist vibe though - it feels more Edwardian than the High Victorian of Granada. Gives it a fresh, though still historical, twist.

As a Russian it's always nice to hear. And frankly I always loved them being softer than most of adaptations even though I enjoy Grenada.
But I am never getting over seeing glimpses of Petersburg in a background (other locations were Riga and some Estonia I think but I am not that familiar)

Sunflower seeds in your pockets.

I hope you die already too. But here we are

You say that so often, and to so many, that it has lost all meaning.

Right back at you, buddy

I actually came here today to see if there be any Russia hate in SH thread. FS never disappoints in the worst way.

When Russia gets out of Ukraine and Putin is out of the window picture, the Russians will be welcome. Put your house in order before coming into anyone else's.

You are American, aren't you?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Am I? Which will suit the rant you are about to make better, me being American or not? It is your strawman, you tell me how you want to stuff it.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah just wondering, but you the only one ranting here

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they might be Ukrainian living abroad, those are the most combative and 'patriotic' from afar. An american wouldn't know about sunflowers and would understand the point you were making. Maybe Polish.

Really? I think it's a pretty known thing at this point. They only know this one too. Ukranians usually use Ukranian language to be aggressive, but mileage can vary.
But to be fair judging from time zones they seem to be European, so you've got a point.

AYRT I actually really like getting to see those glimpses because I’ll never get to see them in real life.

Also, sorry for the trolls in this thread. I really didn’t expect that to happen just by mentioning a show that most of the fandom recognizes as amongst the best :(

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a cool way of thinking!
I find this glimpses charming, because Soviet team obviously was working with what they have got. But knowing the city/landscape in movies always gives me massive whiplash. I think I should re-watch this version, it's such a cozy feel-good series for me.

Ah, it's okay, this one troll is so focused on me, at this point it is kinda flattering, heh
