Go-to dessert!

(Anonymous) 2024-11-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hi there!
I'm being asked to bring dessert to a Friendsgiving and I'm feeling overwhelmed by all of the options online for ideas and recipes. So tell me what works for you. What are your reliable desserts you whip out during holiday season? Bonus points if you have a recipe!

Pie is my favorite desert and also my go-to. If I have lots of time and energy, I'll make the dough, otherwise I'll buy decent-tasting store bought. Either way it usually turns out well.

I've made these, and they're delightful little bites that are not overly-sweet, and not super-expensive to make.

Easy Phyllo Fruit Cups

1 pkg frozen mini phyllo cups
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese softened
3/4 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Fresh raspberries blackberries, and strawberries (diced)

Instructions

Remove phyllo cups from packaging and arrange on a plate. Set aside.
Combine cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla. Mix until sugar is dissolved.
Put mixture into a piping bag with a large tip (or a ziplock bag with one corner cut off) and fill phyllo cups.
Top with berries and enjoy!
Refrigerate until it's time to take them to the event. You can use frozen fruit, as well, if you thaw and drain well, or any other fruit you like, fresh or canned (just drain so the cups don't get squishy).

I don't really do much of that anymore, but I usually went with some kind of cheesecake. NY style, pumpkin cheesecake, chocolate swirl cheesecake, or something like that.

Carrot cake, pumpkin pie, cheesecake, or spice cake cupcakes are all great options that go well with the usual Friendsgiving menu. Oh and sweet potato pie!

If you do a pie, I highly recommend using cool whip for the topping. IME people don’t trust that they’ll like the flavor of homemade. If you do make homemade, pick up some vanilla syrup (you can get Torani for like $6) and add that to the heavy cream before you start whipping.

Pie is best without any toppings to mask the delicious flavor. :)

personally not a big fan of cool whip, I love real whipped cream though. Ice cream on pie is also always good.

Pros of pie: premade shells make it easy, it's expected this time of year. Cons of pie: regular pumpkin and apple are so basic as to be boring, if you're looking for something more creative. Bars go well at parties but may not be as nice at a sit-down thing, so consider the party's nature. If it's mingling and finger food, bars and finger-food desserts are best. Sit down? Pie, cake, anything to sit and eat with a fork and a cup of coffee.

I recently tried an apple-cranberry pie with a cream cheese underlayer and it was damn good, if you want the recipe. As go-tos go, though, I tend to veer toward cheesecake, and have an excellent pumpkin-layered cheesecake recipe too (if you have the springform pan for a baked cheesecake). The seasonal flavors may be apples, pumpkins, cranberries, and other fruit, cinnamon/nutmeg, maybe mint, but you can always buck the expected.

Dark chocolate brownies, using actual melted chocolate and cocoa, not from a mix.

homemade cupcakes if I have time. I can make them in a bunch of different flavors.

Easiest chocolate cake ever:

Easy Oreo Cake
3 cups (1 ~15oz package) Oreo cookies, crushed
1 ¼ tsp baking powder
1 ½ cups milk (this makes for very wet batter and very, very moist cake)

Frosting
4 Tbsp. (1/2 stick) butter, softened
¾ cup powdered sugar
½ tsp. vanilla extract
1/8 tsp. almond extract, optional
1/8 tsp. butter extract, optional
1 Tbsp. milk

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350F.

Crush your cookies in a food processor (sticking them in the refrigerator or freezer for awhile makes for more of a crumb and less of a paste). Add the baking powder and whisk till combined. Slowly add the milk and mix until well combined.

Line an 8x8 baking pan with foil and spray with cooking spray. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick in the centre comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool for at least 30 minutes.

For the frosting, mix the butter, powdered sugar, and extracts together, then add the milk. Spread over cooled cake. Cake stores well in the refrigerator.

It also goes well with a chocolate frosting if you'd rather.

I don't make any desserts but I suggest cheesecake. Two of them, one made with artificial sweetener only for anyone that may be diabetic (like myself)- so they can enjoy cheesecake too. :)

My mother makes chocolate pudding pie: just cook chocolate pudding according to the directions in the box. Pour into pre-made graham cracker crust that you bought from the market and chill. Top with Cool Whip.

I will watch the WORST movies on earth if either Jeff Goldblum or Christopher Lloyd are in them (in fact I *have* watched some of the worst movies on earth for them). Both studied under Meisner, and tend to bring something real to the most cartoonish or even self-parodic of performances. Jennifer Coolidge and Carol Kane I will enjoy in absolutely anything. Michael Sheen I'll watch in just about anything.

Conversely, Chris Pratt's got a VERY narrow window of what he can do as an actor and people keep casting him in things that he does not have the believable range or skill for. (you can see how this makes it difficult for me, because I've got to sit through a lot of Pratt for a little Goldblum in two out of three Jurassic World movies)

Vince Vaughn I usually find obnoxious, but if a movie looks good enough I'll watch it. Adam Devine ruins absolutely everything I've ever seen him in, I barely got through his scenes in Pitch Perfect.

Timothee Chalomet I don't think is bad-- I actually thought he was a lot of fun on SNL!-- but I've just seen his face way too much that I'm sick of him before I even get around to watching any of the movies he's done.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any female actors I find unwatchable, even if I don't think they're *good*. There are bad actors I think are still fun, or there are actors I think seem loathsome as people but they're very talented...

Matthew MacFadyen is great in everything, even (especially?) when the character is a completely awful person. Anthony Hopkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Cate Blanchett.

I didn't love Aubrey Plaza's character in Parks and Rec (personal; she reminds me of a coworker I couldn't stand) but I like everything else she's done.

I have a soft spot for older Harrison Ford and also Meg Ryan movies.

Robert Carlyle is exceptional.

Gillian Anderson as well.

I hate David Thewlis and I don't know why.

Favorite: Amanda Seyfried, Tom Hanks (though NGL anything post-2000s, I don't stand behind this pick as strongly), Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Yeoh, Nicole Kidman, Michael Pitt, Lakeith Stanfield (new crush!)

Least: Zac Efron

Ruins every movie they're in is 100% Nicolas Cage for me. If he's in a movie I will not watch it.
