I logically know this but I just don't *understand* it. Especially for rock bands, the lyrics being sung are quite easy to hear. Does the average person just think it all exists in a vacuum and is a theoretical story and not actual commentary?

I guess the need for a good beat/tune outweighs the need to hear the message, lol.

*has seen students dance to Pumped Up Kicks, and close couples dance to breakup songs*

I remember seeing a wedding video where the couple's first dance song was "Lips of an Angel" and I was like "...isn't that a song about a cheater wanting to split from his wife and get with his side piece?"

Oof. Yeah, not a good look whether the bride was the "side piece" or not.

There's also Sting infamoously talking about how people would use "Every Breath You Take" as a wedding song. U2's "One" has gotten that noteriety, too. And then there's the people who dedicate R.E.M.'s "The One I Love" to their significant others..

Like, even if people don't pay attention to lyrics, surely the fact those songs are in minor keys and have a dark musical sound about them should've tipped them off that maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe this wasn't meant to be a happy song?

yeah, isn't "One" about a guy who has AIDS?

Possibly - I've heard a few theories on what the song's about, but I do seem to remember reading something about that at some point. Looking at the lyrics I could easily see that, for sure.

I have heard of a couple who had Pearl Jam's "Betterman" played at their wedding, and I keep hoping that it was a case of them "cute meeting" because they both liked the song...

...oooof. Yeah, let's hope that's the case, indeed.
