I enjoyed DBZ while it was running but it is easily one of the stupidest things I have ever watched, so you’re not missing out on not getting it OP. Even as a fan I can’t say you’re loosing out on anything.

I liked it because it was the stupidest thing I had ever watched. It is so ridiculous I can't help but laugh and love it.

Same. You just can't take it seriously but that doesn't mean it isn't a good time.

I cannot get over their tiny little feet

why are they so tiny?

We're rewatching it (dubbed) and genuinely the best part is knowing that one man voices 80% of the Namek saga. Yes, that character too.

It's fun and funny. Nothing I'd tattoo on my body or theme my car after.

As a fan, you had to be in a certain (early) time in your life to love it. As an adult now, I really don't even like watching it that much. Lol. It isn't amazing.

Exactly! In the late 90s/early 00s it was the gateway shounen anime for a lot of people, because it was always on, at the right time for teens and college kids to access it. It has a low threshold of engagement because the story isn't complex and caters to the same demographic as blockbuster movies with lots of explosions. Which isn't a small demographic.

But now? A LOT of DBZ fandom for the spinoffs is maintained by 30-40 year old lifetime fans, and maybe their smaller children (I do see a lot of very cute kids dressed as Gohan at cons). The teens/20s audience wants way weirder and gorier in their anime now.

In my country, in the late '80s, the only other shōnen anime we got was Fist of the North Star. It was horribly violent and tbh shouldn't have been broadcast to kids but I still thought it was more interesting that DBZ.

It used to be on in the afternoon just before a show I wanted to watch, so I'd see the last 5-10 minutes and they'd always be charging up some super attack to use against some even more super villain and I'd tune in the next day and they'd STILL be getting ready, and I'd see it again the next week and now the villain would be in a new stage/form and they'd be charging up some super attack...

I like it because it's fun and dumb, but I have a lot of nostalgia for it because I watched it when I was a kid. I would probably feel different about it if I had first watched it as an adult.

I love it but I love fighting anime and shonen anime in general, I just have fun with it. Plus I read the manga when I was 12 so there's a big nostalgia aspect for me. If it's not your thing that's understandable!

Never got it either. I watched the anime as a kid in the '80s because we didn't have a lot of things to watch. I didn't like it then but at least if you missed some episodes you hadn't missed anything so it was good as background noise while you waited for better stuff to start.

I recall really wanting to like it, because I love cartoons and almost every kid I knew was a big fan. My siblings, my cousins, some friends at school.

But I grew bored quickly, and there were too many times like 8 episodes were dedicated to the villain hovering in the air while monologuing as various characters were breathing heavily or grunting.
