It's like we're siblings. I'm grateful my dad didn't vote Trump but he's kind of always been That Guy who overestimates how much he helps out around the house while simultaneously underestimating how much everyone else does. So basically, shoveling the driveway in the morning while it's freezing outside isn't that hard, right? He's right. Because he hasn't shoveled his own driveway in more than a decade. It's cool if he invites people over for dinner and then tells us last minute but of course, he's not going to do any cleaning or cooking - that's on us. He just wants to be the generous, chatty host who pours wine.

And he will totally, absolutely barely listen to whatever you're saying, then immediately try to give you advice even when you didn't ask. You could be a Michelin starred Italian chef who learned cooking at your nonna's knee, but hey, the guy who never cooks Italian and never visits an Italian restaurant is going to give you a few suggestions on your sauce and is genuinely baffled when you're not enthusiastic about his pearls of wisdom.

Ugh yeah. Funny thing is, my dad's not even an attentive host. As soon as he starts getting drunk, nobody except him gets refills. Except he'll also never admit that afterwards, and anybody saying otherwise is lying.
And seriously, while it is annoying that he's so exceptionally lazy I wouldn't even mind all that much if he at least admitted it. But no. Because that would mean my mom and I were right and if there's one thing he hates more than admitting he was wrong, it's admitting that we were right.

That's so infuriating, I'm sorry. I see a lot of men with this kind of problem, though. It's some crazy Boomer shit, some awful sexism and misogyny, and a whole bunch of other issues all coming together as people get older.

Yeah, unfortunately, negative traits rarely get better with age.
