Misery porn burnout (inspired by #6)

[personal profile] thewakokid 2024-11-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Who else is feeling it?

I just can't be doing with all the "Everything is terrible, every one is evil, it's all dark gray - black, there are no happy endings for anyone" misery porn.

I skipped most of Arcane S1 because of it, and I didn't even try S2 because I knew it was gonna be worse.

So: What media are you avoiding / dropping because you're as sick as I am of misery porn? What media are you turning to instead?

I am no longer watching the news (political or otherwise). I check the reddit news sub every other day in the morning to make sure nothing huge has happened and that's it.

I'm also taking a break from my most listened to podcast Knowledge Fight as well. Oddly, getting back into true crime because I find it more relaxing. Lol. Mostly listening to Last Podcast on the Left and Casefile.

"And that's when she stabbed the infant 53 times and dumped the body in the lake"

Good times.

I'm kidding, I know what you mean. I have an idea about why true crime is so relaxing:

1. You know what you're getting into right from the jump. No "Subversion of expectations" to fuck you over at the last minute, you know not to get attached to anyone. and

2. You know, by the very nature of someone making a podcast about it, that the murderer guy got caught, the details of the plot all revealed, and it all gets resolved. There's something comforting in that.

To be fair, some of them don't get caught. Casefile did a series on the Golden State Killer and he wasn't found until after it aired. But yeah, it is a safe way to think about terrifying events. Kind of like horror movies are to some people.

I mean, I feel it a lot. Give me happy, hopeful media these days, please. I don't even mind darkness. I like it. But give me a sense of hope. And give me some genuine heroes.

I'm burnt out on watching my people get kidnapped, raped, murdered, having missiles shot at them, and watching the young brainwashed goose-steppers in the streets scream Death To Jews! on my TV and internet. I'm reading light, fluffy, cozy stuff at home.

High five, still gobbling up Warhammer like it's the only thing that exists.

Yeah, weirdly the misery porn doesn't bother me in fiction. I guess because most of the time, I'm following (or playing) a protagonist who eventually finds a way (or in some cases, fights their way) out of a bad system or situation. And even if they don't, maybe I feel a little comfort knowing it's not just my situation that sucks.

I'm still kinda okay with grimdark in fantasy or sci-fi settings but real world drama movies/shows? No fucking way, if I want to get depressed I'd watch the news.

This is rich considering you reveled in the very real despair of others barely over a week ago. Pound snd.

I see the bait, and I do not take it. If you want to revisit me "reveling" in anything, we do it in the proper thread.

It's not bait. I'm 100% serious, you were celebrating Trump getting elected to stick it to people. Fuck off with that. You're a miserable person who wants everyone else to be miserable like him. Suck ass, intolerant, vain, shit-eating piece of trash.

Take it to the politics thread hermano. Not going to get into the myriad ways you're wrong outside of the appropriate thread (so you can run to case to have the whole thread frozen). By the book, mano.

No. You don't get to shut this down when everyone here SAW YOU CELEBRATING real human despair just for you to turn around and stick your fingers in your ears while you cry about "misery porn burnout" as if you didn't just celebrate REAL misery recently. Either shut up and think before you post, or eat your goddamn words.

nayrt but they're not wrong

If you don't like people throwing your own words in your face, maybe do a little soul searching and think before you post.

A sign of privilege is walking around self-assured about issues you have limited to no information about, and thinking that self-assurance passes for expert knowledge on such matters.

Seriously. You don't get to whine about misery porn burnout after just over a week ago celebrating real live despair from people who now have to worry about if they're going to move or if they can even afford to because they happen to be trans in red states, as just ONE example. Holy shit.

They are in fact wrong. Ignorant and wrong, and that's not my place to correct. And in fact I will not be going into exactly why he's wrong - or more likely outright lying - in any place outside of the politics thread. Because I suspect the plan is to get me to explain in detail how celebrating my preferred candidate winning is not the same as celebrating other people being miserable. They will then run to case point to me breaking comm rules. Not falling for it.

You literally told trans people, who have been told Day Fucking One there will be executive orders denying them life-saving care, that their problems are "all in their head."

Tooooootally not celebrating or rubbing any faces or getting off on misery, you were, like usual, "just joking." Like you were with the adrenochrome and the voting fraud lies. You're ALWAYS "just joking."

This isn't bait. This is me telling you to shove it and don't pretend like you're actually suffering from misery porn burnout as if you don't get off to the suffering of minorities regularly while making thinly-veiled Jew jokes you tooooootes didn't know about.
