Not OP but for me, a lot of adult historical fiction is so far up its own ass with the intent to be the most "dark is realism" adult fiction in the room that it often sacrifices actually interesting character development and engaging plot on the altar of "look how adult and edgy I am with my grimdark setting and gratuitous rape, gore, sex and violence".

I can certainly see that. And I think another commenter said below about a lot of historical fiction being romance too, which yeah, I've come across that. It's fine if romance is your thing, but romance is definitely not my thing so that cuts out a lot of historical fiction right off the bat for me.
